Those things were shotguns???!!! I thought they were mini-RPGs - two direct hits and my car was destroyed.
@PaddsterG2k3: Police no-go areas could work, as long as R* keep some form of the bounty system from RDR, otherwise it seems to me it'd be a very easy way to get rid of wanted stars.

A few of my friends and I, are debating on whether or not V should bring back the hosti le neighborhoods and whether or not it would add or retake away realism. Answer this, what was the most "dangerous" neighborhood in IV? Sure there were projects, but was there anywhere that you really choose to frequent less such as in past GTA games?
In III, I remember having to fly through Saint Marks and the area where the cartel drive the Blue SUV/Trucks, in an effort to avoid my nice car from getting phucked up. In San Andreas, you avoid joy riding in any hood that you've pissed ppl off in, otherwise expect some bullet holes in your paint. I can also remember Little Havana in Vice City having some shady characters as well. In IV, no matter where you drive you don't really have to worry about ppl taking shots at you and I can't recall my car ever being stolen.
So my question is, would you want hostile neighborhoods to return? Some of us thinks it wouldn't be realistic because do ppl really randomly shoot at you in broad day light when you pass through areas in your town/city in real life?.....some of us think it wouldnt be completely unrealistic, because you are more prone to shady things happening in shady areas. For example I live in Chicago, and as with any town you have good areas & bad areas. You don't have the same comfort level parking your car in the street on the Southside (shady) as you would the Northside, and depending on the hood & time of day, being shot at @ random wouldn't be an unheard of event. In IV you can walk around your block in Bohan, just as safely as you could walk around your block in middle park. In SA, the difference between Vinewood & Ganton were night and day. Do you want the same secure feeling between the Hollywood & Compton renditions in V?
Bro. There ain't no dangerous hoods anymore, we're gonna see swagfags running around yelling yolo and sh*t lmao.

id love for SA's version to return where if u stay in an enemy gangs territory for 2 long they start shooting at u & the most dangerous area in IV was hove beach if u shot 1 round u get about 5 russian mobsters shooting u with ak47s, uzis, shotguns, pistols
I want dangerous areas to return but within reason. I don't want to be instantly shot at for simply entering the wrong neighborhood but I defiantly want to feel uneasy at all times. During daylight hours, you are still in danger but more unlikely to be attacked, but after night things become a lot crazier. You still aren't shot instantly simply for entering a certain area but you might notice thugs intimidating you or warning you to get out.
As others have said, drawing attention to yourself increases your chance for a dangerous encounter, driving a nice car in a bad neighborhood will almost certainly mean that you will be involved in a car jacking at night. Driving a low profile car means that you probably will be safe.
Walking around in these neighborhoods, especially if our protag is the Ned Luke character, will draw a lot of attention to you and would be considered suicide unless you arm yourself.
I also want to see NPC vs. NPC conflict as well. Peds being carjacked or shot by gang members and other criminals would be cool, so the danger isn't specific to you.
Random gang violence even in higher end areas (like Vinewood) would be a rarer but still possible scenario as well. They wouldn't be going after you, but rival gang members if they both happened to be in that area. Like I said, this would be rare, but could still happen.

It's not exactly realistic or believable for NPCs to open fire on you just for being in the wrong neighborhood. I live in L.A. and have driven and walked through the rougher areas of Watts and Compton. Only in Watts have I ever felt truly uneasy (on one particular street I was getting stared down by all the gang members chilling on their front porches).
That said, I think it should be like IV where gangs open fire on you only after you do something provocative, like draw a gun, shoot someone, f*ck up one of their cars, etc. Hopefully, V will make it so that gang members try to kill you if you deal drugs and engage in other business dealings on their turf. Maybe gangs can attack you on sight once you have a reputation with them after enough missions, but it should still be rare.
Just because L.A. is the gang capital of the world doesn't mean bullets fly willy-nilly.
It really depends I like it if a the protagonist does a certain mission which angers Gang leaders and orders a "Greenlight" on the protagnist , thats really fun!!! I gonna blow their heads off if they do
I would like really hostile neighborhoods. Maybe ones where you can be asked for money by a group of people, and have to decide whether to give them some money or risk the chance of waking up in hospital with no shoes.
i want some areas like in SA, such as Jefferson and Idlewood, where driving down the street you can already hear the gun shots as you're approaching, but then, as it has been said by others, make it that the AI has to notice you, rather than in SA and VC where the gangs just mob your car when you enter the territory.

NPC vs NPC conflict would definitely be awesome (without having to provoke it by making them punch each other, though fun.) In SA it was cool seeing gangs randomly bump into each other and go to war, as well as the "car jacker/theif" extort and rob citizens at random.
Alot of reasons ppl here have said either they do or dont want them, are the same ones me and my friends are saying. The best option would seems to be bringing them back, but making it so that they only go crazy if you stick around, are wearing the wrong colors, starting ish, etc.
In SA even if you went into a rivals territory, they would follow and talk ish to you before raising their weapons. Sometimes they would even ask CJ what he was reppin' and he would respond "GSF4LIFE" or something in which case they would of course automatically start blasting, regardless of your answer.

Lol, exactly. I mean, I don't think its that common to see groups standing on the corner with shotguns no matter how dangerous the neighborhood is. I remember the Asian gangs doing the same things with MP5's in San Fierro too.

Haha yeah I remember that, right between the Navy Base and main Police station as well. Just like "Yeah we're just strolling along with military grade SMGs in plain sight despite being surrounded by soldiers and cops, no biggie". Ridiculous.

yeah some dangerous neighborhoods would be cool. Something subtle like what San Andreas had. Though there were gangs around some parts in GTAIV, unless I initiated the fight, no one would bother me.
They should make a return! And be more realistic AND dangerous than ever. But you should only be started on by groups of thugs and then attacked, like it was in SA when you wore neutral clothes. Not just shot at when driving. I hope there's places like the hood in training day portrayed as 'the jungle' where even police are afraid to enter, this is a real life hood apparently. I would also like a respect meter so later in the game people won't even dare mess with you! Whatever we want, don't worry rockstar will deliver on this one it's gonna be the perfect gta! Just hope we get another trailer soon!

Yeah I agree that IV lacked a sense of real danger.. things only happened if you instigated them. Having a bunch of guys jump you for punching a woman was pretty cool, but I want to see more stuff like that. It doesn't all have to be violent though. It could also be bums that hassle you for money, annoying drunk college students, punks that try to rob you but run off when you pull out a gun on them.
San Andreas had some cool touches with the Ballas having to spot you first and initially just intimidating and warning you..
they should definately return, however they should be realistic. one way of doing it would be by introducing gang wanted levels and occasional random crimes.
example of a gang wanted level system:
1 skull: being seen in a territory controlled by a gang incurs a 1 skull wanted level, at this level gang members will threaten, insult, push and throw random crap (cans, cigarette butts, etc...) at you. if you stay still for more than 3 seconds, damage their property or attack them with less-lethal force they will attempt to beat you up.
2 skulls: attacking a gang member with lethal force or even being seen holding a firearm in their territory incurs a 2 skull wanted level, at this level gang members will shoot at you on sight.
3 skulls: resisting a gang for more than 2 in-game hours while at a 2 skull wanted level incurs a 3 skull wanted level, at this level gang members will call for backup (consisting of more heavily armed gangsters) whenever they see the PC.
4 skulls: killing a high-profile gang member or destroying important gang property incurs a 4 skull wanted level, at this level gang members will attack your properties and occasionally send small groups of heavily armed gang members after the PC, in an attempt to assassinate him.

That's not entirely true. There are random moments in single player where you are attacked by people you angered. They chase you down and shoot at you.
I also remember once stealing an armored track with a couple Jamaican guys inside. Suddenly an SUV full of Jamaican guys pulls up and starts shooting at me.
I guess the reason you didn't see those III and GTA:SA shootings was because there was no real gang element in GTAIV. Let's say there is a similar type of gang system in GTAV, I don't really see it being similar in AI terms. They'd have to really spot you before starting to come at you or shoot at you. In GTA3 it was really crazy, while in GTA:SA it was updated a bit and made more realistic as you know.
@ Adriaan
Read the OP's statement properly, he's clearly talking about getting shot at or attacked in GTA IV without angering anybody or provoking the situation. That scenario, along with being robbed and carjacked for no reason, never happened in GTA IV or the Episodes.
GTA IV's near-total absence of danger in it's rough neighborhoods had nothing to do with the lack of a gang element - there were plenty of gangs in Liberty City and Alderney, they just did'nt bother you unless you bothered them. It was more likely that Rockstar were just either being lazy, or simply overlooked a very small, but important feature of the game. All they had to do was make the rough areas feel dangerous by including random gunfights, robberies, muggings etc, committed by NPCs against you and other NPCs.
