Latest Drivers
System is a replacement of a goner PC, where i was able to play GTA4 / EFCL quite well.

GTA4 Retail (bought on Releaseday)
EFLC Retail

Installed GTA4 after that EFLC.
Installed 1.0.7 and 1.12 for EFLC

Resolution 1680*1050
unchanged Settings after Install:
1680*1050
Every thing is set to high.

view distance is 25
detail distance 30
Vehicle 51

Game is quite sluggish.
makes a stop, than slowmo, than a short time plays normal.
than stop, slow, playable and so on and on
playable is less then 4-1 secs.

tried severall settings from beginning at the lowest point 800x600
doesnt make a difference.
When Nico is to step through the red door , all stops, then he can walk slowmo to a car.
gets a little better than.

Reinstalled Games several times , last time it didnt start at all, it started rockstar social games over and over.
wanted "repair" but system didnt let me choose and i got a remove.

Did you install the latest drivers?

If that didn't fix the problem, then try this solution.

QUOTE (Rockstar Toronto @ Apr 22 2010, 15:15)
Basically -memrestrict is telling the game how much video memory your system has available.  At startup we query the OS for this value but as some of you may have noticed the number can vary even though you are obviously not changing your video card everytime you play the game.

Once the game exceeds the amount of video memory available, the Os finds it from somewhere else (system memory) and eventually this causes fragmentation and the game throws up an RESC10 error because the OS can't find anymore free memory.  The tricky part is that every OS behaves differently, and thats before you factor in other .dll's and drivers that also make requests from this memory pool which will be different from user to user.

Using -memrestrict explicitly tells the game how much video memory to use.  The math is to take the desired meg number and multiply it by 1024 twice.  So if we wanted to declare 600 megs of VRAM:

600 x 1024 x 1024 = 629145600

you would enter the commandline "-memrestrict -629145600"

Lowering this number increases stability of the game by capping the video memory, but there will come a point where there isn't enough memory to draw everything required by the game which is when you see "popping".

GTA IV is a very good game but also a very ressource demanding game , so i'd better tell ya whatever your rig there's 99% chances you won't be able to run it everything set on very high with no lag . then there are several tweaks to gain fps . but i play on medium high and the game is photorealistic , i mean really ohtorealistic (@ 50 fps constant)

So some "Daddys back..." later:

installed up to 1.0.4
set game to lowres textures and set to minimum -memrestrict.
Not perfect, but better.
Installed 1.0.7 after that.
Performance the same, but the patch reseted the setings to highres Textures wow.gif
But running around things were popping up.
changed the "memrestrict 650117120" and it was much better with the popups.
right now i saw that the "-" was missing! wow.gif

Will try again.
So far:
Its a loading problem.
When nico leaves through the door in the first save house, the game still stutters a little when i look around.
After that, i can look as much as i want.
So i assume the game is loading stuff into memory.
Still sometimes i have 10th of a second stops.
But at least its some kind of playable.

@jpm1
well some time it looked like it wouldnt run properly on the very lowest levels with 800x600 res.
Right know it looks that i can seriously play again.
Considering my former box where GTA4 did well and considering the smashing graphics of Battlefield3 i am quite anoyed.

Am I the only one who has 50-60 FPS and still stutters?
Anyway try Gamebooster
It closes all the unnecessary programs that are active so your games will perform better

Wow, I never saw any OP like you telling your problem in detail. Anyways, your PC looks fine playing the game on Med-Hig. Turn off the Shadows, lower the vehicle density to 20 and turn off the VSync. Also, try my tips. They come very handy. I think you will get 20+ FPS after trying my tips. wink.gif Do a defragmenting after you re-install the game as the game will take 16 GB of your Memory. Check your background applications. Some unwanted anti-viruses are maybe running. Close them. Also, go to "Start->Run->Type "msconfig"->Go to services and disable "Windows Event Log" and some other unwanted programs." You need to stabilize your PC for running GTA 4 so try to run GTA 4 for a couple of times. Then, it will play smoother. I try this for every application so that I don't get them hanged. Don't give full stress on your PC when running GTA 4. I mean like switching out to Desktop in the middle of game, running useless applications while playing GTA 4 or attaching any Multimedia like Ipod, etc., to the computer. Also, don't ever forget that GTA 4 isn't customized for PC well so you may still find lags after trying all these methods. Don't get angry, live with it like you are going to live with your wife (When you get married). tounge.gif

I gave a detail post because you gave one. Hope this helps you. smile.gif

OP's divorced, can't you read cryani.gif

Those tips John, are for Low/Medium end PCs. But in his case, typically he should be able to max out the game with a smooth framerate. The problem here is quite different.

HomerNarr, did you update your GPU driver?

probably the low VRAM. Maybe try a GTX 660 ti, they are even better than a GTX 580 and are very cheap, you could sell that 570 for the same amount of money as buying a GTX 660 ti AND having a performance upgrade at the same time wink.gif wink.gif wink.gif

on scan.co.uk a EVGA 570 is £210
and a gigabyte GTX 660 Ti is £230 so thats pretty good.

Again there is no problem with the hardware, the VRAM isn't low at all. He could max out the game at 40FPS easily.

Oh God, why? Nice trolling, bro.

Yeas, I gave those times for Low End PCs and I know he can max out the game pretty well but there is no harsh in giving them, are there? But, anyways, the game still stutters in High Settings so I would suggest him to go lower his settings as it won't make any difference.

Just a fast reply since i have to get up early and in the evening i get very tired.

I didn't mention since i gave detailed info, but of course the first thing i did, was assuring, that i've got the latest drivers.
I was thinking about my soundcard, since its the oldest component in the system.
Every thing got faster, cpu / mainboard / memory and of course gpu.
the X-Fi is older than around 4 years old.

And no Mods also.

Did you installed your Gta on ssd? If so try putting it on hdd and see if that helps, and as far as I know you shouldn't defragment your ssd as other member suggested.
