I'm not normally one to make topics, but after searching and only finding off hand mentions I wanted to figure out what people think about this topic.
How would people feel about the return of Import/Export Garages with the addition of actual car ownership. The mechanic could work in such a way that after you completed the Import/Export list you would be able to purchase cars that would not be disappear and an NPC character could bring you with a phone call. Another mechanic that could be integrated (if car customization is back) but if you customize car at a customization garage you own that car that simarly can be delivered to you.
I only bring this up because it could be an optional mechanic (one that doesn't require a setting in the option menu, therefore not breaking the flow of the game). Furthermore, whenever I think of a major character in any type of storytelling medium, the usually have a style of dress attributed to them. They also tend to have a vehicle associated to them. For example, the 300C as of late in breaking bad. Because he drives it all the time, the car identifies him and it is like a character itself.
I personally think it would be nice to be able to keep a car through the story, instead of the current system of this is your car until you walk 100 feet from it when it is not in a parking space. Before, anyone starts, yes I know the game is Grand Theft Auto but I still think as the sandbox game it's still fair to have a non-required gameplay feature like this.
Any thoughts?

Any thoughts? | The Import/Export missions we had in GTA IV was absolutely great. I hope R* brings this feature back.

| QUOTE (bluAstrid @ Friday, Sep 7 2012, 21:29) | I just want a more robust mission system where if I show up in a specific car, it stays at the mission start so when I'm done, I can go back there and drive away in it.
Or, if a mission doesn't involve shooting and/or car chase, allow me to go from point A to point B with MY car, and not the mission-giver's. | I agree. This happened a lot in GTAIV. I would get a sweet muscle car, go start a mission, then get handed a vehicle. Stop holding my hand GTA! I can get my own damn car. F_ck you I don't want to drive Michelle's stupid car!

There's a lot to be said for in-game car ownership, it would be nice to be able to buy my own vehicle and have it be persistant (and marked on the radar, with an option to toggle on/off). - If the car gets wrecked and explodes, just show your ownership to the Pay n' Spray and they'll supply a new one. - It would give the player a reason to lock his doors too, if he forgets, an NPC could jack the car and have you chasing the radar blip for your sweet custom ride back - R* could also make it so driving a stolen car too close to police will give you a wanted level, but driving your own vehicles will not. That way there's a reason to buy a car instead of just stealing one. - They could bring back the ol' SA style where peds comment based on your vehicle, so you can impress people with your fine Cheetah or scare the hell outta them with a Monster truck

I don't care if that's realistic, you do not make stealing a car more difficult than buying a car in a game called Grand Theft Auto. You want to do that, rename it Legal Purchase Auto.

In all honesty he does make a point. People play off the GTA name too much. It's not a series about petty car theft. There should be a distinguishing difference between driving a stolen car as opposed to your own. I think it's time R* spiced things up. Driving a stolen car should carry more consequence. I mean sure if you steal some car out in the country on a desolate road that's different, but in the city it should carry harsher consequences IMO. Although you'll hate me for saying this, but by that I mean like in Mafia II where the licence plate is wanted. I think it would make people twice about driving a stolen car around. I think it would make people twice about driving a stolen car around. | Thing is, I don't play GTA to experience real consequences. Why do you think I also hate the ideas of traffic laws and prison time? It wasn't really fun to get wanted levels on license plates in mafia II. It really was just more annoying. I hated the police in mafia II. They don't even really provide thrilling chases, so it's more annoying when they chase you than exciting because you know you'll just have to drive around the corner. I mean, look at need for speed most wanted. That's how you do AI police driving, they can stay on your tail, they use real tactics, they're willing to go above 60 mph unlike IV's and Mafia II's cops, you know, realistic stuff that actually makes the game more exciting instead of stuff that makes it so stealing a car is largely more inconvenient than buying one. I mean, how is a crime game a crime game anymore when crime is the undesirable option and pretty much getting a 9 to 5 job in the fast food industry would be more logical? That's not a crime game, that's a life simulator. I mean, people also appear to want the bounty system so one damn rampage will have me hunted for life unless I load an older save. That's not fun. Too much realism is a bad thing. I truly believe that. In fact, I know that. I know because mafia II's frustrating boring ass taught me so. I had almost no fun in Mafia II, and I don't want any of it's mechanics anywhere near GTA.

It is Grand Theft Auto, but still, in GTA IV it felt f*cking unrealistic when you arrived on a new country and you started jacking cars randomly for no apparent reason, when supposedly Niko didn't want to get in trouble. Also, I hated the fact that when I got a unique vehicle from a mission I wasn't able to use it to do another one because it would dissappear after it... so I stored it just to never use it, which was pointless!
Yes, actual car ownership is a MUST for GTA V if they're really going for a mature sandbox. However, how can they make you not loose your car when you abandon it, I don't know. Having it magically back in a garage is too dumb... maybe the solution is just that the car appeared on the street next to you when you finish a mission, and when you abandon it, you just have to go there and get it back... but still, if you own let's say 10 cars and you abandon them all, how can you not loose them is beyond my mind.

Well, purchasing rare cars would be an interesting feature - an Infernus or something else that would be very difficult to steal, so you could purchase if you want, instead. Gives you something to spend money on, something GTA IV lacked. I believe Saints Row II had something like this, even if it was rather rudimentary.
But that's not what you are talking about. You are talking about stopping GTA IV's retarded car loss mechanics. As in, vehicles disappear if you get too far away, and if you take them on a mission, half the time they dissappear because you have to walk or use a different vehicle. I tried to keep Michelle's silver Merit through GTA IV, and I kept it nice, I even drove it back to the safehouse a few times after I realized the mission was going to make me use a different vehicle. But I used it in one of Manny's missions, where you had to tail the dealer to the warehouse, and the bastard Manny drove off with my car, and it disappeared forever. I was extra glad when he died that time around.
As far as solutions to this, just to let people RPG a little by keeping a car, I have a few ideas (taken from similar games): 3.) Have a large amount of cars available from all garages, be able to fix them for a fee there, and they return to the garage if you leave them anywhere (Mafia II, Saints Row) I don't especially like this. 2.) Have a garage or parking lot/space that fixes your cars and returns them if they are left, but only fits a realistic number of cars (i.e. two car garage = two cars, not 50 that come from nowhere) Mafia I had this, I never had any trouble with it. 1.) Have the last car you drove marked on the map and keep it from disappearing, and have it show up right in front of you when you finish a mission (L.A. Noire). This might be the most fitting for GTA, plus R* already has familiarity with it. It should only work for cars you have stored in your garage/parking spot once already though.
And if you have the LA Noire style way, perhaps you could purchase an insurance policy for a certain price and it would make all cars in your parking spot free like it previous GTAs, otherwise you could save and your car would still have a dent until you got it fixed (but then Pay'n'sprays would have to have color options so you could repair without changing color).
