Hello, I have GTA IV for PC installed on Windows 7, legitimate shop-bought version. Here's the error which keeps popping up and crashing my game (especially during cutscenes)

Description:
Critical runtime problem

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPLICATION CRASH
System RAM: -1
Available RAM: -1993687040
Number of CPUs: 4
Video Card Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Video Card Description: NVIDIA GeForce 310M
Video Card Driver Version: 8.17.0013.0142
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48
Locale ID: 2057

Have played about 10 missions, no problem, until this happened. Computer was MEGA slow on initial install, so had to install FPS booster patches, Game booster and turn the resolution down to the lowest setting, etc.

Specs:
Intel® Core™ i3 CPU M 350 @ 2.27GHz
2.3 GHz Performance Rated at: 5.18 GHz
6.1GB RAM
Microsoft Windows 7 (build 7600), 64-bit
NVIDIA GeForce 310M
NVIDIA High Definition Audio

Any help would be ASTOUNDINGLY appreciated. THANK YOU.

I don't know which patches you installed, but if you modified any original game files, you should reinstall and try again.

Geforce 310M isn't a gaming gpu . even if that gpu reviews on internet seems pretty good , for GTA you need a "real" GC . i think this is your prob

Thanks for the responses! Tried uninstalling the patches and retrying, no such luck (they're only FPS patches, no mods). And short of physically buying and installing a new GPU, I don't know what to do. Any other suggestions?

Are we sure he can put a new GPU in his laptop?

Noticed the M symbol next to graphics and CPU

Even if I could still install a new GPU, surely there's a simpler solution?

Thank you for the responses again! Managed to get rid of the Critical Runtime Error (I fiddled with availablevidmem in commandline.txt), but now a different window pops up when the game crashes (which it transpires had previously always been popping up alongside the Critical Runtime Error - I thought it was always just the same message twice. Now it's just this one in the same circumstances:)

I can be playing from anywhere between 2 and 5 minutes and the game freezes, and this APPCRASH error pops up:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: GTAIV.exe
Application Version: 1.0.7.0
Application Timestamp: 4bd9efbe
Fault Module Name: GTAIV.exe
Fault Module Version: 1.0.7.0

Locale ID: 2057

Any ideas? smile.gif

While I'm not an expert, I know my GPU can run the game comfortably with the FPS patches installed (GTA Lag Fix) etc, as I've been able to play comfortably (at low resolution, obviously) for very extended periods of time, without a hint of slowdown or lag. All of a sudden three days ago these errors just started popping up, with the game crashes coming frequently and periodically upon every single play of the game. I just don't know what could have caused them, as I haven't installed any mods or downloaded any files around that time.

try playing without AV and FW . i suggest you to disconnect from the net while you're doing this . try updating the most hardware drivers you can . perform a malware scan with hijackthis . search the web for tutorials if you don't know how the thing works (easy to understand)

Right, have tried all the above over the last few days and no such luck. Still getting the same APPCRASH error. Would overclocking my GPU (Geforce 310M) help, and if so what would be the safest/best way of going about doing it?

Don't overclock that GPU, laptops are not meant for overclocking anyway.

You should really REALLY reinstall the game and avoid using any modified files for the time being.
