I bet he'll kill some real monkeys in the frustration he might be going through right now. Not making a joke. This blunder really sucks. Imagine his guilt.
"The three species of monkey native to Nepal, the rhesus and Assamese macaque and the common langur, are considered sacred and farmers normally try to scare them away from their crops without injuring the animals."
Entirely the father's fault. I can understand the frustration at your crops being ruined by monkeys, but why take such an extreme step as to shoot them when you could just scare them away? Also, I'm sure he knew his son had been trained to scare monkeys away which explains what the kid was doing up in the tree in the first place, so there was always the possibility that he could have already been doing what his father was trying to do with a gun. I would have cross-checked whether or not my son was in the fields already. But I guess what happened was in a fit of rage and that is never a good thing.
He's learned a cruel lesson, though. Definitely not something any parent wants to go through, but his son's not coming back.

So why did he try to shoot them?
Frustrations. Sometimes, people loose control of themselves when they get too frustrated.

Further proof why the U.N. should remove firearms from peoples of non-U.S. countries. Or Doctor's without Borders need to get more Ophthalmologists out in the field.
