Hi there,

About a couple of weeks ago, I got a iPhone 3GS off a giveaway site (The previous owner didn't want it). The owner said it was unlocked and ready to go, but when I got it, it was blacklisted!!

Cutting the cheese; I'm wondering if you can unblock the blacklisted iPhone.

Cheers,
Ryan.

I think you now have a stolen phone.
A phone gets black listed if the owner loses it and asks the place they bought it from or the insurance company to brick it meanwhile if they have insurance they will get a replacement.

You can get the brick lifted if you are the original owner who asked to have it bricked/black listed, some insurance companies will even lift the black list.even though they already sent a new phone.

Unless you are the original owner this won't work, there may be some shady ways around it but I wouldn't count on it.

I just hope you didn't give away too much personal info or worse yet money when entering this giveaway

Can you use it as an iPod Touch at all?
Maybe you can jail break it.

Have you contacted the some one doing the giveaway and let them know about the phone?

Yep. Your in possession of an iPhone that was reported stolen. The scumbag probably stole it and sold it for drug money. I would suggest telling the police, but be warned, you may be charged with possessing stolen property, I don't mean to scare you, but this is a police/law enforcement issue.

BTW: Jailbreaking opens you up to all kinds of potential security threats and the legality of it is debatable, although not all-out illegal.

It might not necessarily be stolen. The phone can be blacklisted if it is simply lost as well. While trying to find out what to do in this case of a blacklisted phone one forum topic was a a guy that lost his phone, reported it lost, the lost phone was blacklisted then some time later his gf/wife found it some where hidden in the house and was asking what he could to to get it blacklist removed.
My point is that we don't know how or why it was blacklisted. So don't assume it's stolen.

As for the jailbreak, there is nothing illegal about it. It is perfectly 100% legal to do. The catch is that Apple does not support it, and that is a completely different issue.
