It could be just a bad drive. Just because it's new doesn't mean it can't be bad. If you put it back in and the system hangs and doesn't boot or whatever is going on, then you take that drive back out and everything is ok, then it's likely the drive is bad. Just so we're on the same page here though, what kind of drive is it; IDE or SATA. Standard HDD or a SSD? You don't give a whole lot of details.
