I have recently bought GTA IV but cannot seem to continue the story. I have done four jobs for Vlad, loads for Roman and a couple with Little Jacob. There are no icons for characters on the map, I have hung out with Roman a few times and also done taxi fares for him until he said there is no more work for me. I have tried restarting the story twice but it didn't work. I looked on the internet and found out that the next thing that happens is killing Vlad but I can't get onto that mission?!

What platform is it?

If its on PC or PS3 reinstall the game. If its on 360, i dont know what to tell you.

Have you by any chance turned off your phone, that is put it on silent?

No I haven't switched off my phone - I didn't even know you could.

I am on PS3.

I'm wondering if it could be to do with my disc - i.e. scratches. It doesn't seem to be scratched but maybe I just have a "bad luck" disc which prevents the next mission from being unlocked.

No, I doubt this is a consequence of a damaged game disk. That being said, I don't understand why didn't you manage to fix it by starting a new game.

that's where Steam has an advantage . when game is corrupted , you launch a check and the corrupted is automatically fixed

Uninstall the game from PS3 and reinstall.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will look into Steam and see what I can do. Are bugs like these common?

Not exactly common, but they do seem to occur on a regular basis.
