My laptop should be able to run this game.

i7 3720QM at 3.6ghz
8GB Ram
Nvidia 650M 2GB

I still get noticeable texture pop in when I play GTAIV on 1.0.7.0. I'm talking about I look behind me, and then look back, and a lamp post or a tree will warp in from no where.

This is with settings set to how they are after I run "auto-configure", so it's not as if everything is maxed at 100.

I understand that GTAIV is, for lack of a better phrase, a poorly ported POS, but the game has been out for a few years now and I would have expected such issues to have been overcome. Lurking around forums and such it appears that 1.0.7.0 actually made things worse on the texture pop in front.

I am using a commandline.txt with -reservedApp 0 -memrestrict --1887436800

Am I being a total idiot and missing something?

Can you show us the settings you're playing with?

Your memrestrict number is way high and there should be no dashes before it. I suggest you put all settings on high, night shadows off, view distance 30, detail distance 45, then multiply the resource usage by 1024 x 1024 for memrestrict number.

The dashes were actually a mistype, my mistake.

Resource usage is 1990mb so 1990 x 1024 x 1024 = 2086666240.

Therefore my commandline should be:

-reservedApp 0 -memrestrict 2086666240

?

Thank you both for the speedy replies.

Yes, in fact it appears to be worse than before. When I press start to bring up the pause menu, and then go back to game, pretty much all of the textures disappear.

For the -memrestrict command am I using the first number or second number?

E.g Resource usage: 700/1990 would I use 700x1024x1024 or 1990x1024x1024?

If your Resource usage is 700 and your video memoey is 1990, then you should do this:
700x1990x1990=2772070000 so the code is 2772070000 i recommended you to collection the second number from the code with two and there will be 2972070000

Sorry, but that is rubbish!

@JohnC2211, yes, 700 x 1024 x 1024 is correct. It gives the memory amount you use in bytes.

Okay this seems to have stopped the majority of the texture pop in while playing, however when I pause the game and then unpause it everything still disappears.

It may be a laptop, but it's only around 6 months old and fairly high spec. It's a higher spec than the old Desktop that I used to run GTAIV on with no problems whatsoever.

Not saying that it isn't a powerful laptop but they are designed for efficiency in mind.

3DMark isn't a real game but it gives a basis of comparison. The 650M gets around 10k pts whereas the 2 year old Mid range 460GTX gets around 18k pts.

Basically, it is equal to an upper budget card from the last few years so given how demanding and unoptimised GTA4 is then it is no wonder your system feels the strain.
