GTA IV vs SA vs RDR:

user posted image

Map of RDR is smaller than Liberty City in IV. tounge.gif
Tomorrow I will play in RDR and I will carefully analyze the size of the map, but IV and SA are perfectly scaled.

It's very accurate, excluding the RDR map. He said he didn't scale it.

How are you scaling the maps?

Are you just walking 100 (for example) paces and measuring how far that is on each map? Assuming that walking speed is the same in each game. That's the problem, you need some way of comparing using something which is exactly the same length in each game.

Obviously people have struggled with scaling maps from different games for ever ... there are some pretty wild and ridiculous comparisons, and some people don't seem to understand the different between linear dimensions and areas.

Before saying things as though they are a fact, at least tell us how you calculated the relative areas. We don't need any more half-assed ideas being quoted as facts.

This is reasonably accurate process:
  • Find a map feature with a long straight line you can follow
  • Note current distance stat (doing this at beginning of game lets you use smaller units of measure)
  • Photograph current player position on fully-zoomed menu map
  • Walk straight line distance
  • Note new distance stat
  • Photograph new player position on map
  • Calculate distance change
  • Repeat several times as exactly as possible and average result
  • On PC, open a high-res copy of the map in a graphics program
  • Using photos of your two player positions, mark same positions on map
  • Count number of pixels between positions
  • Number of pixels is equal to your distance stat measurement
  • Calculate scale of map

The original map comparison is absurd. You don't need to be some technical geek to see that it's almost impossible to compare map sizes of different developer's games. Whether it's because of scaling, or something else, there is a lot more to the map that simply cannot be measured with a ruler.
GTAIII is by FAR the smallest map mentioned, however, it didn't FEEL small at all. Sure, by today's standards, it is quite small, but it was well thought out, and it's layout was very diverse. Just Cause is enormous, but just feels like an endless loop repeating the same background over and over. One thing Rockstar KNOWS how to do, is create a diverse environment that FEELS big. RDR was big, but really not anywhere near as big as San Andreas. It fit perfectly within it's western theme though, because of the time it's set in. Try traveling by horse from one end of San Andreas to the other, and you will quickly see that San Andreas DWARFS RDR.
Just knowing that GTAV will be the biggest yet, means its larger than San Andreas. That's good enough for me.
