I notice many people are now too much into having the game being as realistic as possible, without really thinking that it's about having a balance between fun and realism. Saints Rows has gone the fun way but IMO they over did it, gta 4 went for the realistic way and although the game is fun and well structured I feel that it lost that special touch it had like in san andreas. In order to avoid this, the game has to be balanced in gameplay aspects and physics. RAGE it's awesome and all that however I think that you should still be able to do cool stuff and not make your character all clumsy and slow like in gta 4, and the incorporation of money plus customization will make things really fun. My point is that I feel that many people are too much into the realism, in a GAME, like I see posts of someone suggesting something and then someone else it's like "but thats not realistic" ..... I wonder, If gta iv hadn't gone the realistic way or it the realism was toned down to a level were it was pretty balanced with fun, what would you guys think about this subject?

Hanging onto moving vehicles would be cool as well, making the character react fast etc etc All of that combined with RAGE and the realism and physics in the game would make it more fun than just over the top action/fun or boring realism.

| QUOTE (Masterfocker @ Wednesday, Aug 8 2012, 00:45) | | The only realistic thing about GTA 4 was the story. I don't even know where people get this ultimate realism bullsh*t. It just ruins the game | No, it doesn't... I played Saints Row 2 again today, which is way better than the third Saints Row game and went back to GTA IV after 20 minutes because the driving wasn't fun at all, killing people wasn't fun at all, should I go on? It really depends on personal preferences, but GTA IV got it all right for me. It's the perfect mix between realism and fun. Some more tweaks for V and the world of Los Santos and the game is set for game of 2013. Having to take cover is something I really like in GTA IV. Rockstar won't go back to games where you can just succeed by standing in the middle of the street spraying smg bullets while you're surrounded by 20 cops. Just look at Red Dead Redemption. Same engine, same kind of realism. Rage and Euphoria are way too much fun to play around with.

| QUOTE (el_roy1985 @ Wednesday, Aug 8 2012, 00:59) | | I don't get why people keep talking about this whole 'realism' crap. It's not even that IV was 'too realistic' that made it not as memorable or fun as SA. IV just wasn't as feature ridden as SA, but that was because they spent all their time on RAGE. V will be just like SA, full of features and vast. So everyone can stop worrying, V will have a hell of a lot of fun things to do and hopefully a lot of cool cheats like SA had. |
This man knows what he's talking about. I completely agree. If GTA IV had all the features SA did, but with the new engine and the same realism as IV, 90% of the people wouldn't even want to play SA anymore. Edit: Sorry for the double post!

Just seemed pretty vague. I guess I was just happy to see that ladder climbing finally made it into the series after all these years. Hand to hand fighting does need some work, though I was glad to see that you can actually KO someone in one hit with the baseball bat if you get them right. No reason though why you can't at least use a sidearm while on a ladder, I guess. But I can't think of a time where I really had a problem because I couldn't.

As others have said, GTA IV's "boring" issue (which I don't agree with because I don't consider it boring) isn't due to its realism but rather its lack of features. Planes and sky-diving and heat-seeking missiles and even certain types of hovercraft are things that exist in real life. The sluggish movement of Niko and his lack of interaction (such as being able to shoot while on a ladder, etc.) isn't due to realism, either. Nor does it really have to do with either RAGE or Euphoria, since animation and physics can be reworked for both. These features are lacking because R* simply either didn't have the time or resources for it, or the thought of them didn't cross their minds, or they didn't feel it fit into the world (planes, for instance, would have been too much because they would go across the map in seconds and there's no destination for them because the game has only one setting). If you felt GTA IV's gameplay was boring, it wasn't so much due to a focus on realism unless you didn't like it because there was no alien weaponry or wearing fursuits, as I suppose realism would have had a hand in keeping those out. GTA V's advantage, then, is that it has the benefit of hindsight, as well as the benefits of technical progress and having the engine already primed and ready to go. So we know we'll be seeing more "fun" features, otherwise known as features that go beyond the bare minimum (or close to it) unlike the vanilla GTA IV. The reason why GTA IV stripped back was that it was on a whole new engine, on unfamiliar hardware, and was the start of a new "generation", of sorts. So there will be a larger focus on "adding" things, like the sort of progression we saw from GTA III to GTA: SA, only we will have just 2 GTA games this generation. So, as far as the balance between "fun and stylized" and "realistic" goes, GTA V will probably at around the level of GTA III or Vice City. | QUOTE (GTAVIViceCity @ Wednesday, Aug 8 2012, 01:33) | | QUOTE (Masterfocker @ Wednesday, Aug 8 2012, 00:45) | | The only realistic thing about GTA 4 was the story. Are you kidding me?
The story. You must be joking. All buildings had unique detailed in them. Rockstar really took their time creating Liberty City. The city was really unique. San andreas had nothing compared to the detail GTA IV had. |
I feel like he was probably more or less defending GTA IV against the accusations that the gameplay was boring because it was too "realistic", because it really wasn't, at least not in the ways that would make it bad. It's as fun as any other GTA game, but maybe a bit more stripped down, but not due to it being "realistic" so much as it being the first GTA game of this generation. It is true that I think that most people who dislike GTA IV's "realism" are either mistaking the lack of fluff features as an attempt at realism, or felt the story was too much of a downer. I hope melee weapons are increased and that you can have more powerful ones, that way if your opponent has a better an M4 but you have a crappy glock pistol, if they get too close, BAM! you kill them quickly a machete or chainsaw. Something IMO it would be cool to have its a way to disarm your opponent, not too easy but not too hard, and that way you can both fight like real men....with improved fighting mechanics or course
