Mafia 3 in development? Mafia 3 is in development for the next Xbox and PlayStation 4, according to Eurogamer. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-08-...xbox-ps4-reportNext AAA for Take two?2K Czech’s next game, Mafia III, has apparently just gone into full development after a year of thorough pre-production, in which the game’s concepts and tech were stripped back to basics and rebuilt. 11 positions are available at 2K Czech, including one for a systems designer. These job listings say the developer is working on its "next AAA title". next-gen launch title?"Was a launch title. Now isn't. " Our source has no details on Mafia III’s intended release window or platforms, but noted that 2K was in attendance at the “Durango” developer’s summit in London, rumoured to be an insider reveal of the next Xbox console. Eurogamer.cz reveals that the gangster sequel had been intended as a next-gen launch title, but this is now unlikely as the developer, 2K Czech, is still in the process of staffing up after the loss of some 40 staff last year. In march 2012 ran the rumor that developer 2K Czech was contributing to Grand Theft Auto V. So,if 2K Czech has already finished its colaboration with R* north; is GTA V completed or close to be finished??A source told us the Czech studio has been working on the game for almost a year, putting its cinematic expertise to work in producing animations for cutscenes and general gameplay. The Rockstar-led project was announced in November 2011, but platform and release information is yet to surface. The tech sharing goes both way, with Rockstar opening its secrets to 2K Czech. Our source tells us the collaboration is part of Take Two’s plan to turn the Mafia series into a major franchise. http://www.vg247.com/2012/03/06/rumour-2k-...to-v-mafia-iii/Umm,mafia III as next gen game? I can´t wait.

| QUOTE (PrometheusX @ Tuesday, Aug 7 2012, 15:16) | The rumours were proven false months ago I guess.
| QUOTE (Gamespot) | | “A 2K Games representative told GameSpot, “Rockstar Games and 2K Czech are not working on any projects together. We haven’t announced any plans regarding a future Mafia release.” | | The original rumor born on cvg247.com in march, and at this point if you check out the article can read this; "When approached for a statement, 2K advised it does not comment on rumours."Fourth months later another source speaks with eurogamer in the same terms, seems suspect for me. Gamestop echoed today the eurogamer news, "A 2K representative told GameSpot, "It is 2K’s policy not to comment on rumours and speculation." Seriously, what do you expect? T2 can´t say, "yeah the news are true, the two studios are trading tech secrets in an attempt to turn Mafia into a monster franchise. " For me the rumor is believable.

And I'm glad for that. It's not quite been two years since II came out. I don't want to see Mafias being shat out willy nilly. And even though I enjoyed II, there's no denying it fell short of the caliber of the first game, so I'd rather see them take the time to try to recapture the magic of the original. Then again, I have no clue how much of the original Illusion Softworks dev team is still in tact at 2K Czech, so it may only continue to decline for all I know. |
The original was an absolute masterpiece. I'd love to see a prequel involving Salieri's time working his way up the criminal ladder; stuff before the end of his friendship with Morello would be interesting. Unlikely ever to see it mind you. I'd really like to see Mirror's Edge 2 and Alan Wake 2 usher in the next gen, so to speak. But I'm not so convinced Mafia III would be finished just over 3 years after II. If there is any truth to the rumors of 2K Czech and Rockstar^ helping each other along (the only thing that gives it any plausibility is that they are both under the same parent company) then maybe development could be sped up a bit. | QUOTE (elanman @ Tuesday, Aug 7 2012, 16:23) | The original was an absolute masterpiece. Yes, seeing a prequel would be amazing. It would probably have to go back to the early 1910's through the late 1920's in that case, which means fewer and slower cars, but hey, I'm all for it. They could throw in some horseback riding as well. It could be a great game, but probably a tough sell. They'll probably aim for a time span that offers more evolution in cars so as to appeal to a wider audience.

God knows why I typed b instead of spoiler. The first Mafia was great for many reasons. Open-ended levels and decent challenge were particularly refreshing in today's world of hand-holding and linearity. That said, I do see your point on vehicles. In fact, a prequel would probably challenge a lot of presumptions about the Mafia-lifestyle-- Frank actually says that, in his day, violence was not resorted to as unthinkingly as in the 1930s and later.
