The ambitious, hypothetical horror trilogy collaboration with director Guillermo del Toro, THQ and Volition, inSane, has been cancelled.

New THQ president Jason Rubin revealed the news this afternoon on a financial call for THQ’s quarterly results.

The rights to inSane have reverted back to del Toro, which means he could technically do something with it in the future.

del Toro is in the midst of production on his next film, the monster and robot-filled (aka awesome) Pacific Rim.

With THQ in the midst of attempting a financial turnaround, the change isn’t surprising. The project was the baby of former executive VP of core games (and once Hollywood scribe) Danny Bilson. He is no longer with THQ.

Volition is currently working on a sequel to Saints Row: The Third. Originally, Volition was to release an expansion dubbed Saints Row: Enter the Dominatrix, but that's been wrapped into a full sequel.

What is going on with THQ lately? They use to be a good company. Now it seems like all they do is cancel games, force developers to package 50% of there game as DLC (Saints row 3), and keep making a bunch of stuff people dont want.

Damn, I was wondering whatever happened to this title. I remember when this was announced all the way in 2010, and then we never heard a thing about it afterward. I nearly forgot about it, but I figured it'd be canned after this long of an information drought after it was announced and seeing the state THQ is in this year. Seeing as Volition was developing it and how the Saints Row series is part of what keeps THQ afloat (no matter how disappointing The Third was), they most likely didn't see inSane selling that well and figured it'd be better to focus on Saints Row 4.

THQ has been struggling for the last couple years, in no small part because of some major flops like Homefront and their stock is in the toilet. At this point they've basically got Saints Row and license properties like WWE. Wouldn't be surprised if they go under or get bought out soon.

Jeez! I think I read Guillermo saying this was going to be the best game ever.

THQ it seems, are on the slippery slope.

This is pretty sad. I was looking forward to seeing what Del Toro could do.

THQ is a mess. I wonder if Saints Row 4 and Darksiders 2 can keep them up.

All i know, is if saints row 4 is anything like saints row 3, im not getting it. Volition had a great franchise started. Saints row 1 and 2 were great. THQ forced them to follow by there rules for Saints row 3. Which is why 70% of the game was turned into paid DLC.

This looks like THQ's agony. They ending or canceling game series and they try to rely on not so good games. They will end up like many studios before them probably (Interplay was exactly in the same condition just before the death. They cancelled Van Buren only to publish Lionheart).

I read that Homefront did really well, and actually improved sales for THQ, it was the Udraw tablet that screwed them over. But I'm sad about this, did actually sound like it was going to be a good game.

Some details regarding about "INSANE" a horror video game developed by a unknown developer and it's quite unknown weather or not if the game is still in-development. I actually think "it is"

"Previous reports claiming that Del Toro had already lined up a new publisher for his survival horror game proved premature.

Speaking to the Toronto Sun about the Insane trilogy, which THQ cancelled last year, the critically acclaimed film director said his ambitious video game project is still being pitched to major players in the game industry.

"We are in talks with a very, very big company," he said. "I can’t say who, but it’s one of the big ones. They really responded to the game, they responded to what we were trying. Some of the devices of the game I need to update, because now I’ve seen them in other games that just came out. That always happens. But the principle we’re trying to do with the game is to make it a really immersive narrative experience. It’s still a really challenging proposal.”

I'm guessing it's either Activision, EA or Ubisoft. Leaning towards Ubisoft.
