Am I supposed to update directly to the 1.0.7.0 one? Or do I need to install others (and which?) first?

You can update straight to 1.0.7.0, or if you prefer the old shadow system, then use 1.0.4.0. You cannot downgrade to a previous patch though. You need to reinstall to do that.

As far as patches go: If you have a lower-end system, it would more than likely be best to use Patch 4 for best performance...However, on mid-level PC's it doesn't matter which patch you use really, as there is no real noticeable difference between patch 4 and 7 on those systems-I have confirmed that since I have the DVD version(Patch 4) and the Steam version(Patch 7), and get the same 30-40 avg. fps on both versions...

So, start with Patch 4, and if you are ok with the performance, keep it, otherwise update to Patch 7...But, start with Patch 4 before going to the latest one, as it is way easier to update to the next higher patch than it is to downgrade to a lower one(as that would involve an un-install and re-install)...
