Just over a minute from entry!

Just witnessed history this morning. The mars rover curiosity touched down at roughly 6.30am gmt. Was very tense and a quick decent was on the ground within 7 minutes of leaving space.

first true images from Curiosity.
one taken from the front showing the wheels (right), the other taken from the rear in which you can see the shadow of the rover itself (left).

user posted image

my brother just called me from Boston and had a great line.
he saw those pictures and said "These look like they were taken in 1970. Maybe that delay is longer than we thought." lol.gif

also, USA! USA! USA!
number one on Mars!

It's not every morning you get to wake up to live pictures of another planets surface. You didnt see the landing live due to every camera not being active yet. There was telematary from the oddesey space craft in orbit on decent. They are just starting the conference about it on nasa tv. Im on my xbox watching live luckly mandged to wake up just pre orbital decent.

I wonder what sort of alien conspiracy theories will arise as a result of this mission. monocle.gif

the conspiracy theories have already started, but they're not about aliens.

it's just a new iteration of the Moon landing conspiracy.
people think that all of this stuff happens in a secret Hollywood film studio.

"that must explain why the pictures are such low quality!" catspider.gif

Very exciting stuff. I watched it live, and the moment the guy said, "touchdown confirmed", was just awe inspiring.

Hopefully they'll find those pesky prothean ruins.

Just a title nitpick, but Eagle hasn't been used since Apollo 11.

Was watching the live stream from NASA and following Mars Curiosity on Twitter. The best lines are:

'We are safe on Mars' - Mission Control

'I'm safely on the surface of Mars. GALE CRATER I AM IN YOU!!!' - Mars Curiosity.

For those that want to know @MarsCuriosity is the twitter handle.

Nice one, NASA and friends.

Curiosity mate, do us a favor and look for Charlie Adam's ball up while you're up there, says "Carling Cup Final 2012" on it.

Man, watching Mission Control on NASA's live stream was so exciting! I started watching about 15 minutes before touchdown and it was just so cool. I really wasn't sure that the skycrane would work.

When those first pictures came in I almost started crying. I can't wait for every single new picture.

Newt's vision is coming to fruition.

If he and those Dutch guys teamed up we'd have the entire Solar System colonised by the end of the century. But what is this mission actually supposed to be for? Like what are they hoping to achieve/discover/research.

The probe is loaded with scientific equipment to really carry out a study of Mars and really get an understanding off it. So they will be wanting to check the climate, geology, materials, signs of life/possibility of life.

Good stuff.

The "Signs of life thing" will be a while though. I still don't believe they have settled on what method they are going to use to drill down into the areas where they suspect water may have been.

The last two rovers took some killer color photographs. I'm too lazy to dig up the site(s) but it can be a fun time killer to visit the one site where they have 3d images of some of the cooler images.
