So yeah, here in India we celebrate the day by meeting friends, catching up with lost buddies and making new friends.
Friends tie wrist bands to each other as a symbol of friendship.

I always thought Friendship day was every day.
A true friend doesn't say, "You should have called." when you show up on his/her doorstep without warning.
Or "let's make a date for lunch(/dinner)." instead of "let's get some food now."

I've never heard of this. I like the concept. We should replace nationalism all around the world for international friendship. I know its a pipe dream but I'm a dreamer so I have to go with whats right. "Imagine all the people" in perfect harmony.

Friendship day is it? And why do South America have it on a different day to everyone else, the awkward sods. They're like those annoying kids at birthday parties who want to sit in the corner on their own and not join in because they've got problems at home and their parents fight a lot. And why does it need its own day? Everything has its own day/week/month nowadays. Why can't it just be bloody Sunday? Actually the Northern Irish might have something to say about that, and we don't want to piss them off even more. Why can't it just be Sunday?

If someone tries to put a wristband on me tomorrow I'm going to fling my crap at them, just like every other day.

It becomes tough to find time for those friends who don't meet up regularly or live at a distant place. Also, no one takes the initiative to call such friends on a regular day. This day helps meet long lost friends. So yeah, it's a good day when you don't need excuses to catch up with friends.

I find the whole idea of doing certain things on certain days\dates silly.

So I am supposed to be nice to black people (none in my area) or whatever other minorities on this day? I am nice to anybody who is respectful and minds his own business, regardless of race. I don't have to be extra nice to those people just because they were oppressed by my race in the past, the same way I shouldn't be extra nice to women because they were oppressed by my gender in the past. I had nothing to do with these historical events. After all, we want everybody to be equal so we have to stop this "special" treatment towards minorities or women.

I'm all for being nice and everything but I agree with this. OP is making it sound like "let's all be nice for one day then we can continue to be assholes every other day." What's wrong with just being nice every day?
