QUOTE (Flint-007 @ Friday, Aug 3 2012, 02:15)
Sorry, but it's been bothering me ever since the trailer came out that people automatically assume that the trailor narrator (and most likely our protagonist) is a family man. The entire quotation can be taken as a hypothetical, or that it is yet to happen.

I was sure this thread would get locked so I didn't comment, but since it stayed open and people are actually trying to argue that you're wrong I'll throw in my support.

It's obvious that the narration isn't from a single, unbroken conversation:

"So, I bought a big house." one of a couple breaks in continuity. "Came here, put my feet up..."

Some of the statements are outright facetious:

"I guess it was the weather."

His allusions to kids and being a "family man" are not only hypothetical but unfulfilled:

"...thought I'd be a dad like all the other dads. My kids? They'd be like the kids on TV. We'd play ball and sit in the sun but... "

In short, nothing in the narration can be viewed as an accurate character profile.

Edit: Also, the fact that he's the narrator of the first trailer, and opens his narration with "Why did I move here?" it seems overwhelmingly certain that he's the protagonist. It's almost cognate to "Perhaps here things will be different."

Funny thing is that people accept the narrator as the protagonist just because "he's the narrator, damn it!", but doesn't accept southern California as an indication of only one main city because "this doesn't proof anything!"... Random off-topic comment, please ignore this part.

Back to topic, I'm still in doubt if protagonist (assuming the narrator is him) is a father or not. I'm not a native English speaker, but he sounds ambiguous in this part for me. When he mentions the kids, I can't say if he wishes to have a family but hasn't made one yet (maybe due to his crime life), or if he had these kids but it didn't go as he expected (and due to some crisis returned to "crime career").

About people hating the idea of the protagonist being a father, I only have to warn 2 things, and compare them to GTA4 characters. If his family will be an active part of gameplay, it'll be like the relationship between Niko and Roman, or Luis and his mother - the first having to save the latter, for example. If the family is only background story, it'll be like the relationship between Niko and his mother.

About people hating the idea of having a gay protagonist, and mainly the ones not giving a good reason for that, it seems you're looking for the stereotypical gay. You're imagining a guy wearing heavy pink, using more "bling" than a rapper and screaming in woman voice when nervous. You're forgetting Gay Tony, who is in my opinion one of the best characters of the whole series. You know he's gay because he mentions his relationship and after some time shows who's the guy, and not because he dresses like a christmas tree. He's another common like the others, his only difference is his love relationship.

"I thought" is perfect past;
and
"I'd be a dad" is conditional, actually

I'd like to steal this thread for a while.

Would y'all play as a gay protagonist?

Absolutely I'd play as a gay man. My gay uncle died of AIDS, he was the most badass guy ever.

If every single species in the animal kingdom exhibits homosexuality, I have no problem with human beings being gay.

I also loved seeing Luis's mother in the game, it really hit home.

Sorry, but it's been bothering me ever since the trailer came out that people automatically assume that the trailor narrator (and most likely our protagonist) is a family man. The entire quotation can be taken as a hypothetical, or that it is yet to happen. Just look:

"Be a good guy for once, a family man,
So, I bought a big house, came here, put my feet up,
Thought I'd be a dad like all the other dad's,
My kids, will be like the kids on TV, we play ball and sit in the sun,
But, well, you know how it is."

He doesn't have to have kids, he is just expecting that he will. Also, for those of you who claim the "FPS playing son" from the RAGE casting call is his son, why would he want to play ball with him? That kid is supposed to be 17-18. You don't play ball in the yard with an 18 year old.

Its his fantasy. He wants to come to LS to fulfill it.

I can't say it bothers me what other people think..
but I don't even assume balcony guy is the narrator, or the main character or even a playable character. That assumption may follow from the way the trailer is edited.. but that may be deliberate to throw us off. The first IV trailer did something similar.

His narration sounds to me that he's lamenting on his past and wrong choices made, not anticipating anything in the future. He's talking about how he deceived himself into thinking having an average familyman life was possible for him, but of course it isn't.

It's true that the narrator doesn't really confirm anything. It's all left to interpretation. He might not have even had the kids, or he could have had the kids, but they weren't like all the other kids.

It's not really clear, they deliberately left it ambiguous.

If i had to guess, i'd say the narrator is the protagonist who may or may not be standing on a balcony.

But as i said, it's only a guess.

Well said, couldn't say it better. Also, for the people who complain about the age of the main character - assuming that guy from the downtown skyline scene is really the protagonist - you must be too young for the game.
