My friend has just bought a new LCD, and he set it at 85Hz. But whenever he enters a gta game(3,Vice and San) the hz of the monitor goes back to 60hz(default). How can this be solved?
He used XP Service pack 2.

Can't I do not think.

Those games were made ten years ago, 85hz weren't on monitors back then.

That's odd.He can get max payne 1 to run at 85hz.

Sure. His specs in short are:
AMD Athlon x2 2.50 GhZ
2 GB Ram
Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT(not sure about this through)

Make sure the resolution is set right, reading around there isn't really a solution.

Actually 85Hz monitors were around back then. They were called CRT monitors.
Most CRTs the lower the resolution the more options you had for the refresh rate. I had an old Sony/Dell 15in CRT that at 800x600 would do 85hz, maybe even higher, and I had it when GTA3 came out.

It would help to know what monitor your friend had. Most LCD monitors are maxed at 60Hz, so for him to have one that can go to 85Hz is impressive and interesting and one I would really like to know more about.

The resolution of the monitor and the game can be 2 different sizes. However if the desktop resolution is something smaller than what it is native to and that allows for a faster refresh rate and then the game changes it to a resolution that the monitor doesn't support at that desktop refresh rate then it'll fall back to the fastest refresh rate it does support.
Yeah I know that's confusing so let me try it this way.
Let's say his monitor supports 1280x1024 at 85Hz but it can also do 1600x1200 at 60Hz. He has his desktop set at 1280x1024 @ 85Hz but the game wants to run at 1600x1200 then the monitor will switch to 60Hz. Make sense?

Keep in mind that the refresh rate is the number of times per second that the monitor can draw images on the screen. So even if your system specs and your game produce 100fps the monitor is only going to display whatever it's refresh rate is.

Many LCD TVs are 120 hz now, not so sure on monitors though.

Yes they are 120Hz however that's for TV viewing and not necessarily for PC use. It might stay at 120Hz if you use HDMI but not when using the DVI or VGA port on the TV.
Many TVs still use a smaller resolution when connected to the PC.

Newegg list only 3 monitors that do 85Hz and the cheapest is just under $800. There is also 15 that do 120Hz and the cheapest there is $300 for a 23.6in then goes to $350 and so on up.

Does it matter that much? San Andreas fps limit is 71, III/VC's will probably be a bit lower.

San Andreas runs at 25 frames per second when the frame limiter is turned on. The other PC GTA games run at 30 FPS.

@TheMaN1 Maybe your friend forced that refresh rate for the monitor. As it was said before, most LCDs only go as far as 60 Hz.
I am also pretty sure the game doesn't run at that refresh rate by default. It actually runs at whatever refresh rate your monitor supports which could mean that his monitor doesn't really support 85 Hz and that he forced that setting.
