Many (myself included) think war is a nasty business. Which song that is against war do you like the most?

For myself, it's Phil Ochs' "I Ain't Marching Anymore"

Oh sh*t...really? I could sit here all day since the bulk of what I listen to is from the era of anti war songs.

Pretty hard to not think about this one when it comes to anti war songs.

I'm surprised this wasn't on the list first...

Anyways, my favorite is: Why Can't We Be Friends - War

Good stuff guys.

I was actually prepared to go downstairs and get my copy to rip into a video. I was very shocked to see this available on YT

Edit:
and how in the hell has this thread gotten a few posts and no one posted Edwin Starr's "War"

Obvious props to Marvin Gaye's biggest single, and half of Dylan's late 60s repertoire. I liked a lot of stuff from that era, but I'll keep it modern with a Rise Against song I particularly enjoy.

My wife mocked me for playing this song earlier...even though I know she secretly enjoyed it.

Yup...hard to believe that it is an anti-war song.

hard to believe that it is an anti-war song.

that's because it's not an anti-war song tounge.gif

QUOTE
The writer/performer, Ivan Doroschuk, has explained that "The Safety Dance" is a protest against bouncers stopping dancers pogoing to 1980s New Wave music in clubs when disco was dying and New Wave was up and coming. New Wave dancing, especially pogoing, was different from disco dancing, because it was done individually instead of with partners and involved holding the torso rigid and thrashing about. To uninformed bystanders this could look dangerous, especially if pogoers accidentally bounced into one another (the more deliberately violent evolution of pogoing is slam dancing). The bouncers did not like pogoing so they would tell pogoers to stop or be kicked out of the club. Thus, the song is a protest and a call for freedom of expression. Other lyrics in the song include references to the way pogoing looked to bouncers, especially "And you can act real rude and totally removed/And I can act like an imbecile".

Doroschuk disagrees with two common interpretations of the song. Firstly, he notes it is not a call for safe sex. Doroschuk says that is reading too much into the lyrics. Secondly, he explained that it is not an anti-nuclear protest despite the nuclear imagery at the end of the video. Doroschuk says that he considers Men Without Hats "a punk band with one hit song" and that as such they were "anti-everything".

personally I love Safety Dance. I think it's an underrated song.
my friends and I have been blasting that track since middle school.

I can easily see why people believe that it's an anti-war song. and not just because of the nuclear bombs at the end of the video. you can definitely read into the lyrics in a way that makes it sound like a protest song.
but unfortunately the man who actually wrote it says that it's not. and I'll take his word for it biggrin.gif

It's almost hard to imagine this is Protest the Hero. I remember listening to this sh*t when they were still just a local band. Nonetheless, great anti-war song.

YES! I don't know how many times, I've jumped into a chopper and rained hell on people while playing this song on Battlefield Vietnam. I know, it's kind of the opposite of the message of the song, but how can I resist?

And got to agree with El Diablo and Fortunate Son, also in Battlefield Vietnam.

My contribution...
