Hey all,

I was wondering if there are any fellow game journalists on this website. May it be journalists for a site or a magazine doesn't matter. I myself am from www.3nter.nl. A Dutch gamesite and our aim is to bring news and bring our own view/opinion into it. We also pay attention to negativity surrounding gaming. Recently a criminologist (not sure if that's a word) linked the Denver shooting to videogames, and i made an article about it, giving my own opinion on it. So our slogan is basically....the site with an opinion of its own. If we receive a game from a publisher and we just don't like it really much, we are honest about it, honest and always fair.

The Gamescom event is around the corner and it's going to be great. I've visited the event even before it got the name Gamescom, it was then Games Convention. This was years ago and it was for another gamesite that me and my bro made, but sadly it never really took off, no visitors, nothing. Our site ain't that old, early this year we started out and we can notice that its not easy to make appointments with some publishers for during the Gamescom. Bigger sites get the upper hand, it's just the way it is. But we'll still gonna be seeing plenty of demonstrations and play sessions of games like Tomb Raider, Hitman Absolution, and so on. We'll probably play very little games and its mostly going to be 'behind closed doors' presentations, but at the end of the day...i find those much more special personally.

It's just very unfortunete that in my country(maybe others too) it's very hard to make this your real profession, it would be my dream to write articles, interviews with publishers/devs, go to events..and get paid for it, oh my.

So yeah...that's basically it, let's discuss game journalism here. Maybe give eachother advice and what not.

Cheers!

*raises hand*

I guess I'm a games journalist, although I don't really call myself a journalist just someone who enjoys to write about games and would love to do it for a living. I write for and operate the website PWGaming.co.uk (Also found in my lovely signature) and it is a small UK based gaming website. I set it up back in late 2010 as I was part of a community radio project where I did a short 10-15 minute games segment, there was a lot I wanted to talk about and discuss and this gave me a platform. My aim really is to get the latest news out there in a friendly and professional way and also to provide honest reviews. One thing I do when reviewing a game is also to note the age rating for any parents reading, from there I will discuss the content of the game so they can have a clearer idea of the title and its content.

As far as events go, I'm unfortunately located in the North East of England where we don't exactly have much. I work a 12 hour a week minimum wage job so unfortunately attending events is something I'm not really able to do. I did have the chance to go down to THQ for the Darksiders II preview but had to miss it due to a family issue and I doubt I'll really get many other opportunities. My major issue really is promotion, I generally hate the idea of posting on forums to bring attention so restrict myself to Twitter/Facebook or word of mouth, unfortunately I have a thing where people tend to let me down tounge.gif

Successes though, well I did recently attend the Max Payne 3 preview event in NYC thanks to my decade long affiliation with GTAWarehouse, I have also been published on The Guardian's Comment is Free website: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/20...g-industry-help

So yeah, it's something I work hard on but to be honest I'm not making a lot of progress due to circumstances and lack of marketing or opportunity.

Cool man!

What matters most at the end of the day, is if you enjoy it. It definitely sucks that you can't attend many shows and such, but if you enjoy what you are doing, that should be enough. In a perfect world we'd be writing articles, getting interviews and attending shows and getting paid for it, to make a decent living smile.gif

Hard to make it your profession in the Netherlands?

We have three fat adolescent retards talking about penises and how cool shooting games are, who get paid to make a sh*tty show with the only opinions of games being MODDERTJEVET or SAAI, IK KAN NIEMAND IN DE BALLEN SCHIETEN. (I'm talking about Gamekings, a dutch "gaming show".)

Surely it wouldn't be too hard to make a slightly less worse show and get it aired, I mean, it'll be nearly impossible to make a worse show. God, those guys suck.

Haha of course, I mean for me being able to chat to a few people in the industry, getting the occasional freebie and having even a few people say they like what I'm going makes it worthwhile. The passion I have for the industry and gaming is what drives me forward.

Hahaha...i agree with you man. I don't like that show at all, just like you. I also hate how their magazine, Power Unlimited talks bullsh*t. They say something is a fact when its a rumor or simply a lie. During E3 they claimed that Rainbow Six Patriots had gone back to the drawing table, they claimed it was true. But they forget to mention that THEY are the ones creating that rumour right there on the spot.

Recently they stated that GTA V would definitely be out after March, totally ignoring Take Two's predictions and stating it like a fact and all those visitors eating it up and believing every single word.

I made an article about Rainbow Six on our site and we kinda called out GameKings for that nonsense, we speak against it. It may not do much, but we at least show that lies are not apreciated. Oh and i forgot to mention, our own game-show is in the planning, just hasn't been fully realized yet smile.gif

The thing with GK is, they got support from all kinds of companies and it's not easy to get that done. Who knows, maybe some day for us, but for now it's just for fun.

I'm looking into establishing my own gaming site but it's only in preliminary stages at the moment. Hopefully I can share more information within the next 2 months.
