Dear forumers,

I am staying in a foreign country for at least about 3 years and currently am looking for any job relating to IT field. My question is that is possible to put modding games on my resume? I don't have any work experiences and have just completed my high school degree.

I don't think it will help, sadly.

No. It will not help you at all. Do not include that.

Unless you'll be working with programming or digital design, I don't think it would help much.

If you did put it down, I wouldn't say you "modded games," but rather list your level of knowledge in programs that you used for modding, such as 3DSMax or C++ or whatever.

Most of what they'll be looking for is your formal education though.

A high school diploma won't do much for you these days unless you're already just amazingly talented and even then you have to be pretty lucky to become successful doing a formal career without any higher education. You should look into continuing your schooling, it's mainly bullsh*t but it shows perspective employers that you can stick with a program and complete it which makes you more attractive as a job candidate.

What does your work visa say about the job(s) you can work at?

it doesn't really matter where in the world you are looking for a job.
modding games will not count for anything on a resume.

you would benefit as much from listing "game modding" on a resume as you would from not listing anything at all tounge2.gif
unless you are actually applying to work for a video game studio, modding will be irrelevant to any potential employer. they probably wouldn't even know what "modding" means.

Actually I am a student undertaking an IT Major. The visa just says "Work Limitation". Nothing much. We are only allowed to work 40 hours per fortnight. Also I am looking at the basic sectors like the IT support/help desk probably.

Put it in hobbies/interests as people have noted. Did you ever mow lawns for neighbors and make some coin? If so, put that down as 'Started a small business while in high school.' Babysit? Put that down as 'Experience with managing groups of people.'

When you say IT Major what does that cover, what specific area (multimedia, software, networking)?

If you worked as part of a team modding then it will be worth putting down. But the golden rule is if it is not relevant to the job you are applying for then it can do more harm than good. For instance if applying for a cooking job having being a modder for games wouldnt be relevant. You can maybe list it as a hobby or interest. But unless like i said it was part of a team And was a previous job might not be worth mentioning.

As long as you can turn it into intelligent wording relating directly to the job your applying for, no don't bother. If you can make it sound relevant, do it.

Personally experience though, a CV won't get you the job. CV's only decide who to interview. It's the interview that gets you the job.

Well friend, I can't for any real reason figure out why a man such as yourself would limit his opportunities to foreign affairs. It's obvious from your repertoire of skills that you are not lacking in any developmental skillsets, and with a high school diploma I'm sure you could land a loan from your parents for a good $20,000. From there, you could network to local business, start a conglomerate on the local business area once you make enough money, then outsource your jobs to foreigners for cheaper trade. It's simple American economics, friend. It works, and it's the American way.

Lol what's your deal dude, are you a Mitt Romney impersonator? I read that entire paragraph in his monotone robot voice.

My friend, you've really got to leverage yourself in as many ways as possible. As a politician, and as a law school graduate and financial professional, I can tell you with vehement certainty that the ability to act like a megalomaniac without letting on to people that you are, in fact, a megalomaniac is one of the most empowering skills you can acquire for yourself. As Iminicus said, turning simple things as babysitting children or mowing people's lawns can be spun in so many different ways, and the fact is, friend, people will buy it.

Furthermore, you always have to start out from the bottom - there are no ifs, buts or maybes about it. Getting a highly responsible job in the IT field would be pretty difficult if you have no experience, so, at most, you should only expect to get a job consisting of primarily menial tasks for the time being, especially given that you have no work experience. The first job is always the hardest to get, and once you pass that hurdle, you'll be well on the way to prosperity, friend.

Dont make a resume if you can avoid. Tell them you are a recent high school graduate trying to get into the field.

If they ask about experience or why they should hire you tell them you are easily trainable, seeking formal training independently AND because you're fresh you can learn to do things the way they want you to. You have no bad work ha its from previous employers.

"At home i enjoy spending my spare time creating modifications for video games, i became interested in modding after deciding my ideas would be great to have in game. I build character models from the ground up and set myself deadlines to ensure i stay on target with my workload, i enjoy seeing my ideas being brought to life and i set myself high standards so that i can fine tune my skills."

If i was an employer and somebody sent me that i'd think, well he is dedicated to his interests, he has good time keeping in finishing his projects, he's well organised, interested in improving his ability and has a creative personality, i'd then put it in the 'people we need to interview' pile because in an office enviroment timekeeping, organisation and working under pressure are all applicable qualities that they will be looking for.

Good luck lad.
