BTW what is the difference between a M and an AO game since its only a one year difference?

Mainstream retail outlets won't carry AO games. A game of GTA's scale rated AO is financially unfeasible. I'm sure it'd be done if it were.

If people would accept that there's adult entertainment for adults then maybe TTWO would put it out, the way NC-17 movies are starting to gain some traction. There's a lot of creative freedom. But this is video games. In most of the GTA-playing world (i.e. excluding Japan, where the series isn't that popular) video games are still generally thought of as toys for kids.

I blame Nintendo of America in significant part for that fact, and I say that fully aware I have Link in my sig.

Wow, video games have evolved from toys to something like Hollywood. Nintendo, however, is my least favorite.. publisher, is it? They lost their touch.

I can however see GTA sales deteriorating heavily due to an AO rating.

No need to imagine so hard... See what happened when GTASA "achieved" this rating after discovering the "hot coffee" content.

GTA IV was an attempt to clue in the mainstream on that very fact. I think it did a lot of good to that end, actually.

Games used to try to get perfect ratings from the EGMs and IGNs and GamePros of the world. GTA IV was getting the rave reviews from major mainstream news sources, ones that not long ago paid video games no mind.

Two things happened, GTA became famous and sales broke records, and Rockstar studios begun to be despised by various butthurt people who threatened and seeked to ban the game itself.

I could say, during that time, GTASA became INfamous. Imagine you, entering the store, grabbing GTASA box with a giant "AO" printed on it, and with the virtual sex scenes printed over newspapers.

People around you would probably start to comment "Hey, isn't that sex game? This guy is such a wanker to play something like this..."

After that, you're either in shame and leave the box alone, or if you're really into this kind of thing, or are planning to play it as it was supposed to, you'll take it and ignore the comments.

It was a big ado about nothing, but it properly exposed a warped aspect about our culture in that simulating murder and massive crime sprees is (somewhat) acceptable but simulated consensual sex is obscene to the point that a Wal-Mart or Target won't carry to sell even to adults. You have a very few top retail outlets with a lot of sway over this.

And the thing was, it was hardly pornographic if pornographic means it should have a reasonable chance to sexually arouse someone. It might as well have been 3D polygon Custer's Revenge, yet more politically correct. Really, thinking about it, that's probably where the notion of video games as children's entertainment started, with the backlash over that and some other stuff made for Atari way back when.

Yeah, the notoriety of the game flooded the headlines..

^ Flooding headlines isn't necessarily a good thing. The crazy guy who shoot in the cinema flooded the headlines.

I was working for a newspaper when that broke and was looking for stories from the wire to put onto a page when I saw the Hot Coffee story in an article. Not by a gaming mag or site but The Associated Press. I had read about the nude girlfriend models being found a few months earlier but still, GTA had gone and made national news and for something actually in the game. Not just something stupid some kids were doing and claiming they were inspired by GTA to do them. They'd hit the big time.

Oh yeah, a mission where we fly a passenger plane into a tower and a mission where we enter a cinema and kill everyone inside.

Kill-able domesticated animals(i.e. the dog in the trailer) will probably be the hot topic of this one. Personally, I think that it's time to start adding children and mothers with strollers into GTA.

Yeah but every time you hit the stroller it's "JUST CANS"

Well, if you can break into a house and catch out a guy jerking, it'd be nice if you could stay there and observe the cum bursting out of his penis. Then he cleans it, puts his dick inside his pants and moves along. That's a good level of pushing the boundaries of censoring.

And the question I made before remains unanswered... Do you really buy a game thinking "OMFG I CAN KILLZ CHILDZ, DAWGZ & HAEV SECS WIF THER CORPZE!" or buy it thinking how fun the game is?

In my sh*tty opinion, if you're going to the first option, you're looking for a tabloid, not a game...

To be honest, I don't want the game to be gory as f*ck, filled with sex scenes, etc. Good lord, there has to be some limit to how much you can put. Do I really want to cut a guy's body off in a very modern engine? No. I hope the gore is like RDR with slight improvements.

Even the developers must think "OK this is wrong" with some features.
