My friends 1000 watt PSU exploded the other evening. He has now brought a new one but his I5 2500k Overclocked CPU - 4.4ghz is now overheating it is running at 91-98 degress and the PC will shut down. Is the CPU fried? and could have this been caused by the PSU explosion or was it the CPU that caused the PSU to blow?

If it was a low-quality PSU it could easily explode by itself.

Dumb question but does it even have decent cooling or it's stock cooling?

Ok i think i need to rephrase this. The CPU is cooled and has extra fans as well.

The CPU was fine before the explosion.

What i want to know is Could the PSU (when it blew up) be responsible for the now overheating CPU.

Or was it the CPU that was on the way out that caused the PSU to blow?

I think your PSU is responsible. Do PSUs not have fuses built in? And was the previous processor that overheated overclocked or not?

First thing I would do is disable the OC, go back to default, to see what happens.
However if the PSU literally exploded then I'm surprised any of the system still works.

Chances are the old PSU did some damage on it's way out. Could be a problem with the new PSU, but I doubt it.

Check CPU cooler is actually in contact with the CPU. There could a possibility one of the legs is loose or not push in correctly.
Remove CPU cooler and reinstall it.
Don't forget to clean off old thermal paste and apply a new layer.

f*ck! That must have been a real piece of sh*t for the caps to just vent like that. Even if it wasn't on adequate surge protection, it still should have behaved better than that. I suggest you inquire to Underwriters Laboratories to see if that piece of sh*t was even eligible for a UL certification.

naw naw naw naw. 1. that psu got dust all in it. 2. heatsinks are way too small for 1000w psu - ridiculous.
on and on. both of you guys (original poster and his friend) sounds like my friends - they know enough to be dangerous.

What about a 1150watt power supply it was an xfx one! Turns out the cpu wasnt seated right and 3 out of the 4 4gb ram sticks maybe broken but hes going through them to make sure. I recon there ok just got unsettled when he thought his whole pc was on fire.

Nonsense. That system would work at that level of overclock, at 100% load, on a 550w PSU without any issues. Additional screens do not draw down any more power as opposed to single-screen 100% load usage.

Exactly. 750W would be far more than enough, because this rig needs 300-350W tops. And thats's what you get when you buy a sh*tty power supply that can't deliver its labeled power without breaking the spec. A proper 750W PSU should be able to power OCed i5 + three HD5870s, if not four (single HD5870 consumes ~130W in games, ~190W when under a very heavy, surreal load - according to techpowerup).

Sorry sivis but what bit didnt you read when i said it wasnt running on a 700 watt one and you suggest a 550 would have done? The problem started when he put a new screen on and was solved by a better psu And yoyo that is nowhere near the recomended wattage for his card its not even the recommended for mine and mines a mid range card from a year or so ago.
