I tidied up your poll.
That aside, I think Saints Row has done the best job of imitating the GTA style without being too much of a copycat.
I cleaned it up a bit more since Scarface and The World Is Yours = the same game.
And I threw in a "none" option since I feel that some of these, especially Mafia and Driver, hardly qualify as GTA clones. Not to mention, imo, the ones that are basically clones are sh*t.
Because it's THE ONLY GTA clone out there. The rest aren't.
Yeah this here, Saints Row is the only game that is really quite similar to GTA.
There doesn't seem to be other developers willing to do something the same as GTA because there doesn't really need to be more sandbox games just like it, and to make people switch over it has to have something to offer, it has to be close to as good as GTA which means big development costs and probably won't sell as much anyway, FPS clones can get away with it because they are much easier and cheaper to make so it's not so important to rake in big sales (Call Of Juarez for example). GTA has built itself up over-time with pretty well no direct competition until Saints Row which now is the only other direct competitor and it isn't that close in terms of sales anyway. I do think Saints Row is a pretty good game though and kudos to them for trying.
Scarface: The World Is Yours felt similar to GTA: Vice City for obvious reasons but was a lot more fun IMO. Scarface had the drug dealing, fast-talking police and gang territory mini games which made for better game play than Vice City. So I vote Scarface as the best GTA clone. Saints Row 2 was fun too but I found it a bit too hard without cheats. The rag doll physics made the game play too goofy for my taste.
You guys forgot getaway. That was very comparable with gta 3.
Thats true, but IMO Getaway 1 was terrible and number 2 was only slightly better. I hated that in the first game you had to complete all missions to do free roam.
I know, however, a lot of British people will favour for its location.
The only GTA clone I have really enjoyed playing was The Simpsons: Hit & Run. I own some Driver games and True Crime New York City but they didn't feel the same as GTA both in terms of missions and free roaming.
There are som games that are similar to GTA that were quite good though. I'm thinking of Red Dead Redemption and The Italian Job from 2001. And although I have never really played The Getaway, it was fun too watch when my brother played it.
