No, there is no afterlife. After you die there is nothing, same as before you were born.

Pretty much. Once you die, your brain dosn't function any more. You cease to exist in any complex way.

Nate, it's most probably your imagination. Any doctor or psychologist would tell you that. smile.gif
But don't worry, you are not crazy.

probably, should write a book then if it is that vivid
and why do people keep saying that sad.gif I AM CRAZY! and proud of it (well I think eccentric is the more accurate word but I can spell crazy without using google)

Because everyone is crazy. Some are crazier than others. So, when I say crazy I mean completly insane. smile.gif

The idea of an afterlife reeks of bullsh*t. I can see why the idea could be appealing, but I'm firmly in the non-believer camp.

QUOTE (NateShaw92 @ Monday, Jul 16 2012, 20:32)
yes and no

Profound.

allow me to elaborate

logicly speaking - no
but i have memories, they feel like memories, too vivid to be imagination (remember much less than I could 10 years ago) and they were memories of being someone else, in a different time, before 1992 (year of my birth)

call me crazy (you will not be the first nor the last) but it is what I remember, it is there

I'm sure we all have "memories" of a past life. But from a logical stand point, I just think it's our sub conscious creating memories of the person we really wanted to be.

Don't get me wrong, I am a strong believer in the afterlife, and I guess re-incarnation. But I'm not really sure what to make of someone who has unlocked the memories of a past life. Sure it maybe possible, because there are so many things about our universe, supernatural and natural, that we don't know about, so I'm not saying it's absolutely impossible. Just very, very unlikely to ever happen until we can prove string theory or something. Or find a way to successfully time travel at will.

Do you believe that there are just things out there that we can't explain?  There are numerous claims that people make that they die and see an afterlife when doctors see no brain activity whatsoever.

I don't know I just try to keep an open mind.

These claims of seeing an afterlife are no better than UFO abductee claims, until you can prove to me I can't "believe" it.

They are as credible as people on drugs in my opinion. Those near death experiences happen when the brain doesn't function properly, usually on anesthetics.

No I don't, but the idea behind it seems cool. I mean being able to be with dead relatives and such again would be nice, but I can't help but view such a concept as merely a coping mechanism for loss of life and loved ones.

One of the founding reasons we developed religion is for a coping mechanism to deal with death and the aftermath, how the hell can we keep religion (or lack of it) out of it?

think it was meant that don't let this turn into a religious flame war, like some people who believe in religion calling those who don't evil (like fox news) or calling people of certain religious groups evil and/or terrorists (like... you guessed it fox news) or the flipside for those who don't believe in religion (like... fox news? ha you fell right into my trap mr bond - I meant me) bash those who do and call them stupid (like... me? no Brian griffin, I don't call religious people stupid unless they ARE stupid)

first off fox news never says anything like that. And second you are right that is what I meant I just didnt want to have an argument over religion is all

I have to ask, when you stop and really think about it, is an afterlife even an appealing prospect?
Eternal life. Just think about that for a moment. No release, no end, just infinity. It sounds nightmarish.

I find myself agreeing with you a worrying amount these days.

Seriously, eternal life is f*cking scary. I get bored on a long sunday afternoon. I would not be able to make it through to the heat death of the universe without wanting to off myself simply out of sheer boredom, only to do so and end up in yet another plane of existence.

exactly.

who really wants eternal life?
especially if you have to spend it hanging out on fluffy clouds, surrounded by people who went to church every Sunday, with nothing to do but watch people who are still alive down on Earth.

sweet mother of god, I cannot think of anything more boring.
that would be like torture. you cannot leave. you have to spend eternity there. think about it. that's the worst idea I've ever heard.

That's more to do with the fact that brain activity is generally examined in PVS/Coma using CT scans rather than EEG scanning. There's essentially little point looking for electrical activity in someone in a non-responsive state as its only the low-level activity that keeps the heart beating and the basic nervous system functioning- CT scans are generally looking for internal bleeding so its totally different. The brain still continues to operate when someone is clinically dead- that is, when the heart stops beating. Its incredibly rare- in fact I would go so far as to say near enough impossible- for someone who has experienced no brain activity whatsoever for a period prolonged enough for a measurement to be taken regarding their lack of brain activity not to have suffered complete and total higher-level brain death. It only takes something like 2-5 minutes for total higher-level brain death to occur.

Why not eternal damnation? I mean hell has all the best artists and musicians, so the music has to be way better. And they probably let you do fun stuff like sh*t in Hitler's mouth every once in a while. Eternal punishment might actually be a joy ride. devil.gif

Serious answer to the topic, it's not really a question whether I believe in an afterlife or not, it's that I simply don't worry about it.

there was also another case where a women was going to undergo a very dangerous heart surgery procedure and the doctor put pictures on the ceiling with the drawing facing the wall and the person wound up temporarily dying and had no vital signs at all. They were able to revive this person and she was asked what the picture was and she was able to tell them. That is a little strange.

FOR SOVNGARDE!

But seriously, I don't really know what I believe in regarding afterlife. I'm not into religion, so I don't personally believe in any religious afterlife theories. I sort of believe in a higher plane of consciousness, sort of a different wavelength of perceivable thought, potentially embracing the pineal gland, that maybe we have lost connection to due a possible number of reasons. Be it evolution, or the gradual loss of brain use over generations in the masses, where TV and advertising have pulverised the brain into a wallet-bashing mush.
Whether the "soul" or "insert word of similar meaning" stays alive in another consciousness or not, I do not know, but I'll find out one day.

Life is a form of Energy. (Call it something else if you don’t like Energy).
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed.
When the current body dies the (Life) Energy will seek a new Host.

Maybe a new host life will be better, most likely not when you view the known world as a whole. Thus a reason to treat everyone kindly.

If you need a God Figure (or any type of Religion) go ahead and insert one, but it isn’t necessary.

Your argument is wrong. Life is not a form of energy, life uses energy to maintain itself. When you die, your "energy" will go back to other life forms that will eat you up.

WoW... somebody didn't get on with their Priest today. What does *Science* have to do with it.
Do you believe in an afterlife? is the Question. My explanation is a hell of a lot better than none. I thought this was on the theme of metaphysics.

So go get the captains fire wood he's looking for you.

Well, no, it's not. There's nothing to suggest this is true, and to enforce your viewpoint you completely defaced a law of physics, hence what science has to do with this. It's not a better explanation just because it's an explanation at all. That would mean my explanation for the universe (a gigantic falcon waved an american flag too fast and started the big bang) is just as valid as anyone else's.

It's not.

My memory isn't so good, but I swear I argued this (in one post) with lil weasel not too long ago. Life causes energy - energy does not cause life.

Throw a pebble into a large pond. Watch the waves ripple out from where it landed. Watch those waves get smaller the further they go out from where the pebble landed. That is energy. Eventually the waves are no more - they don't appear in another pond...they are just done.
