One of the founding reasons we developed religion is for a coping mechanism to deal with death and the aftermath, how the hell can we keep religion (or lack of it) out of it?

Share your opinions here but leave religion out of if please because all we need is a fight to break out over that!

Considering concepts of an afterlife are directly tied in to theology, I fail to see how anyone can adequately discuss the subject whilst tiptoeing around the issue of organised religion.

But on topic, no, I don't believe in an afterlife. There is no magical wonderland in which all the wrongs are righted and all the good people are rewarded. There's just the world. And cruel as it may often be, the world is a beautiful place.
We don't ascend to white clouds, we simply return to the soil and become part of the same planet that sustained us for so long.

That's all there is. And it's enough, it really is. Because if there was a God and there was a Heaven, what would it be but a state of eternal servitude?

No, I don't believe in it. I have not seen any evidence of it's existence and therefore cannot believe in it. What's the statement, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". This is going to have to take a bit of evidence to really prove it. Then after that it's going to have to be peer reviewed and retested.

I'm going to have to say this, if our entire ability to think and reason and be conscious is based on our brain then once it stops working then what would continue our consciousness? A soul is just as extraordinary as an afterlife and may not even be testable and it can't be tested then it can't be proven and is not a valid theory.

Do you believe that there are just things out there that we can't explain? There are numerous claims that people make that they die and see an afterlife when doctors see no brain activity whatsoever.

I don't know I just try to keep an open mind.

I will keep an open mind. If somehow someone proves an afterlife through testing or whatever then it just becomes a fact and not even a matter of belief.

These claims of seeing an afterlife are no better than UFO abductee claims, until you can prove to me I can't "believe" it.

Well I don't think religion, or at least organised religion, is necessarily is to blame for our beliefs in an afterlife. After all we've believed in an afterlife pretty much ever since we walked the Earth as humans. When we looked up at the night sky and saw stars we thought of them as our ancestors and as spirits. Organised religion probably did enhance and focus the belief in an afterlife, but it certainly didn't create it.

Well I don't believe in an afterlife, simply because there isn't anything to make me think there is one. I suppose if you want to get really gay and philosophical about it, you could say that our bodies die and give nutrients to other organisms. And so a part of us lives on in these organisms that use our smelly mushy body juices for sustenance. But I prefer just to say that we die, and that's it.

The idea of an afterlife reeks of bullsh*t. I can see why the idea could be appealing, but I'm firmly in the non-believer camp.

allow me to elaborate

logicly speaking - no
but i have memories, they feel like memories, too vivid to be imagination (remember much less than I could 10 years ago) and they were memories of being someone else, in a different time, before 1992 (year of my birth)

call me crazy (you will not be the first nor the last) but it is what I remember, it is there

I have to ask, when you stop and really think about it, is an afterlife even an appealing prospect?
Eternal life. Just think about that for a moment. No release, no end, just infinity. It sounds nightmarish.

think it was meant that don't let this turn into a religious flame war, like some people who believe in religion calling those who don't evil (like fox news) or calling people of certain religious groups evil and/or terrorists (like... you guessed it fox news) or the flipside for those who don't believe in religion (like... fox news? ha you fell right into my trap mr bond - I meant me) bash those who do and call them stupid (like... me? no Brian griffin, I don't call religious people stupid unless they ARE stupid)

@Nate The human brain is a wonderful thing. I'm not going to call you or anybody else crazy for thinking or believing something, but I don't think for one second that the memories you mentioned have come from anywhere but your own brain, in this lifetime.

I actually quite like it that we get 80.4 years to do everything we want to do before popping our clogs. If nothing else it's a kick up the backside to have some fun while we have the chance, be spontaneous and take opportunities as they pop up. I don't want a back-up plan or a cop out or a fanciful romantic notion of a life after this one. Life is short and (arguably) pointless, so make the most of it.

Pretty much. Once you die, your brain dosn't function any more. You cease to exist in any complex way.

Nate, it's most probably your imagination. Any doctor or psychologist would tell you that. smile.gif
But don't worry, you are not crazy.
