Not really. If you look hard enough you'll find plenty of amazing music. Yes, the music in the pop charts is rather dire but there are some pretty good songs popping up every now and again.
Chromatics, Birdy, Alabama Shakes, Ben Howard, Matt Corby, Alex Clare, Nite Jewel, Non Tiq, Grimes, Nicki Bluhm, Michael Kiwanuka...well, you get the gist.
It helps to be open to all types of music too. If you constrain yourself, you only exacerbate the problem.
you can say that POP music sucks. that makes more sense.
but if you just say "modern" music then you're including ALL MUSIC that happens to be made today just because it's modern. and that's dumb. it's also not true.
there's plenty of great music being made today. modern has nothing to do with it. you're thinking of "pop" music. pop music always sucks. that's why it's pop. it's for teenagers to spend their parents money on. that's why it is all controlled like an exact science by the major record labels and their consumer corporations.
There is much more bad music nowadays and it is more popular because it is much easier to make, but do not let that mislead you. There is a lot of good music, whether it is independent music or even popular music, you just have to open up to more genres of music.
In my experience, the people who hate modern music are generally narrow minded when it comes to music.

Not gonna argue about the idea that pop is manufactured, that's pretty much a given, but to say pop music, by definition, sucks is just as stupid and narrow minded as only liking Top 40 stuff. Pop music is shallow and fun and doesn't claim to be anything more. Catchy tunes and memorable lyrics aren't bad things just because they're simplistic. Beef Burgers are simplistic and cheap, but that doesn't mean they're not delicious.
It's like saying all blockbuster movies suck because they're designed for mass market and thus extensively controlled by boards of executives to maximise market appeal.

I think this thread sucks, what with it lacking any reasoning or argument to back your opinion up. A lot of modern music sucks, but at the same time a lot of it is just as good as it used to be.
