Starring SIKKS66's favourite mancrush Michael Fassbender!

QUOTE (Empire Online)
After a tortured period of to-ing and fro-ing between studio Sony and game publisher Ubisoft, Michael Fassbender is officially on board to star and co-produce a cinematic adaptation of the immensely popular Assassin's Creed gaming franchise. It's a shot in the arm for the creators who after rejecting Sony have been without an official studio home.

Taking on the role of Desmond Miles - originally voiced by Nolan North, the man behind Uncharted's Nathan Drake and many more - as well as his bloodletting ancestors, the plot in of itself is still unconfirmed, but it looks set to hit the screen, big studio backing or not.

For anyone unaware of Assassin's Creed's set-up, the games' plots revolve around an unassuming barman drawn into a fantastical world of assassins' guilds. Travelling through history, he's asked to relive his family's lives through the magic of cutting-edge DNA technology.

The creative forces behind the 30 million unit-selling gaming series have so far pushed back again the traditional studio system, keen to keep more control of the film's story, be its setting that of the first game's medieval period, the second's Renaissance or the upcoming third title's American Revolution.

"Michael Fassbender was our first choice" Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of the specially-founded Ubisoft Motion Pictures, tells Variety. "He's an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor."

"We're open to re-discuss with the key studios once the production package is finalised," Baronnet adds. Other games on the fledging studios cinematic adaptation wishlist include the similarly popular Tom Clancy series.

Whether this will be another franchise as successful as Resident Evil or another unfortunate one-off à la Hitman, Max Payne and Doom, remains to be seen, with no fixed release date announced as yet.

Source.

What do people make of this? If they kind of ignore (the otherwise brilliant) videogame series and make it a standalone film with the Fass entering the animus and reliving his ancestors lives in a bid to stop the Templars... it could be f*cking brilliant. I just hope they don't let the videogame shackle the characters and the potential for a unique plot. This is one of those cases where a massive break from the game might actually be better. Assassin's Creed the movie could be a fantastic sci-fi film in it's own right, if done right.

N.B. This being announced just as I'm getting back into the series after taking a break after Assassin's Creed II...

Isn't he just dreamy?

Just look at that chiselled jawline.

I'm unsure as to how they could pull it off. Unless they deviate from the original and create their Frankenstein we got to remember, the AC1 plot in itself isn't very interesting especially by today's standards and with Ezio's story overshadowing it.

It's gonna be one weird movie regardless of how good or bad it turns out. That much is certain.

That's the question.

I'd prefer they make an original story for the film. Keep Desmond as the protagonist if they must but make it it's own contained story.

Random bloke taken from the street by mysterious gang and told he's the descendant history's greatest assassins. They train him up on the animus, he goes in and relives the memories of Altair and perhaps some new characters. It could end up being like The Matrix or something... perhaps even better than old bunch of garbage that went downhill after the first film.

I'd rather it be a spin-off of Desmond's story.

Video game movies suck. So I'd rather have it be as far from the main story as possible.

personally I'd love to see the movie focus on Altair's memories instead of Ezio's.

Renaissance Italy has been done SO MANY times in Hollywood.
but you almost never see 12th century Damascus, Acre, or Jerusalem. that would be fascinating to see re-created.

plus I'm afraid that if they did Ezio's story, everything about the movie would Victorian-era "steampunk." the kind of stuff that we've seen a thousand times before and that's been so popular lately in films like the new Sherlock Holmes. Ezio's story is full of those contraptions like the pistol and bombs and Da Vinci's inventions (flying machine, tank, etc).

I've just seen too much of that crap recently.
I'd love to see them go with the ancient Middle-East where the weapons were crude and combat was more limited. it would make the action scenes more entertaining methinks.

I wanna' see Altair busting out some sick, lightning-fast sword and dagger play.
I don't wanna' see Ezio sitting back and shooting people from afar and then dropping a smoke bomb to get away.

Assassin's Creed movie panic.gif

Those little 20 minute clips they make when marketing the games were pretty cool and so if they can get a 2 hour or so slot then it does have the potential to be pretty decent. But video games to movies always tend to be very meh and get ruined, do they go by the games or do they sort of add there only little stories and mix it up a bit?

Hope they get this right.

I agree. It would look overrated if you continue Desmond's story in a movie (What I'm saying is, the original story should stay at the gaming console). And presuming Assassins creed "newbies" will be watching, Its better off to show a "Clean" plot were in other words a Spinoff is created were they will understand how the "stuff" works in Assassins Creed. I mean imagine yourself watching a movie in the middle part and the chances are you would rather leave the Theater or go watch some other movies that you can start from the beginning (Since you don't understand the plot why watch it then.) .

I think this'll be terrible, as all video game movies are wont to be. I hope it isn't, but I don't think even Fassbender can make this worthwhile.

At least Ubisoft are keeping a hold of all (most?) the rights and not just farming it out to some other studio though.

AC1 can be covered in like a 5-10 minute opening scene or something, introducing you to the pieces of eden the templars blah blah blah blah blah. then focus on AC2 as far as the first film is concerned showing the breakout and yadda yadda.

I reckon this movie is going to be really cool, whether it is Ezio's story or Desmond's. Should have a lot of rooftop free running and lots of fight scenes.

Don't know if it was me but I thought the movie 'Anonymous' was going to be sort of like Assassin's Creed.
