May I ask what the definition of 'rigging' is?

I've seen it mentioned many times on this forum but can't get to grips with what it means. I am not asking how it's done, I just want to know what the purpose of 'rigging' is?

Rigging is the act of making a 3D model in the needed format with needed bones and dummies.

...and making this all working together as one finally 'animable' 3D character to be precisive tounge.gif In other words, to 'skin' particular parts of character , to "attach" vertices to relations with appropriatelly hierarched bones, to make already made 3d char alive, not exactly to model such wink.gif
