Hello there, this is my first post in this section but I just want some outside opinions on a question of mine.

I'm deciding on my first car. I get my license at the end of october and I've started saving money. My budget is around $2500 max. My dad and my brothers aare all mechanics so I'm looking for a beater for a project car.
I understand I'm no drift racer but, thats what I'm interested in and there are tracks near me and lots of awesome roads to drive around here. Keep in mind I want something manual and rwd.

I found these that are near me and in the price range:

http://jerseyshore.craigslist.org/cto/3031714657.html

http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/3065800417.html
My brother has an extra 5speed trans at his house. I'm leaning towards the Porshe or the 240 I think.

Thanks in advance for any opinions or advice.

Find an E30 325is. Decent power but not too much for a new driver, lightweight, LSD, roomy, lots of aftermarket, etc.

Then there's 240's. They're insanely popular here and rightfully so. They're light and have the proper configuation for fun. 155hp KA is enough to have fun with without being too deadly. Though the open diff just doesn't cut it for drifting or hard driving. It seems hard to get a decent affordable LSD for them though. Some use J30 or Q45 diffs but most generally don't like viscous LSD's. Most decent setup 240's in town are welded which have their own annoying quirks. I'm not big on full time 100% lockup for a daily.

I think the Supra might be too much for a new driver, 944's are garbage to keep running even if they are good to drive, and Montes are too much of a boat to do anything but go straight.

The monte was pretty much out of the question, I soon realized that as I posted. The supra's cool and all but I gotta say, (no homo) I don't think its a good looking car. Sure I'd get one for the right price but I just don't really like the look of those years.

I like 240's, my brother is all about them, and he's got a built one in his garage. I'll post a pic if I get one, the thing looks cool. I just hate how they are so popular. I've always been about something different, or something that stands out from the rest. I'm not into the flashy body kits, or none of the sh*t I just mean a car that few people have.

My buddy has one of those 944, and put drove it on the original engine for a while. From what I saw it looked like a fun car. He put an Lt1 in it(not my choice) and ended up loosing his hood. The hinges broke and smashed his windsheild while he was driving.

I always liked the older BMW's. Hell, if I can find a one in the budget thats not a bad choice.

My advice, don't get a BMW for your first car unless you'd like to pay a lot for parts etc. I'm totally diggin the Supra though.. would be my choice if I had one. Except that minor head gasket problem..

Agreed. I understand the cost fears if you only use OEM parts, but for a first car you won't be looking for something new anyway so there's no harm in using pattern parts and I see no reason why they would be more expensive for an old beamer than anything else.

Haha crown vice and old caprices are always cool. Just need some aviators and a kick ass mustache and you can pretend to be a cop.

Old bmw's are cool. I really like the 80's body styles of the 325i coupe's. I just don't know much about them so I'm kinda spooked.

So do those old porshe's have problems alot? I really like those I just hear bad things about them.

Not that one car is a good representation, but even Wheeler Dealers couldn't restore a 944 for a sensible amount of money so ended up gutting it and turning it into a track day car.

Best bang-for-the-buck will always be the 240. There's a flood of them in my state. I actually know someone who has several of them and goes to drifting sessions in New York. He never paid more than $3,000 for them and they are pretty quick.

We know you'd like a cheap manual car with enough power to easily spin the tires. Try to find a turbo 240 with an RB25 and you're golden.
