So which shows and movies would you guys pick that had a similar feel to GTA?

Mine- The Wire slightly reminds me of some aspects of San Andreas. Being caught up in "the game" street life in the hood, etc

Stuff like Miami Vice and Scarface to Vice City for obvious reasons. What are some others?

American Psycho reminds me of TBoGT, because you can kill for fun, rape women and it's all funny at the same time.

While it is an absolutely sh*t film, the main villains of The Marine came straight out of a GTA game. Seriously, in their introduction, the main dude guns down two cops and blows up a police car before firing an assault rifle down the street. Its exactly like a shoot out in IV.

I guess Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is also a good GTA movie set in London, with shady gangsters and drug deals going on all the time. Great movie.

Grand Theft Auto movie wasn't worth watching and except the title it has nothing to do with GTA.

The Driver
Crank (not exactly in GTA style, but crazy over the top "gangster" movie)
Gone in sixty seconds (1974 - better and 2000 - slightly worse)
Eastern Promises - good movie about russian bratva in London

Heat, considering there is a mission in GTA IV heavily based off of it. But in general it has many elements that can be found in a GTA game because it is a crime film and takes place in Los Angeles.

Yeah... Eastern Promises is good, I think Houser referenced it as an influence.

Drive has the look or feel of a GTA. It really does.

Mesrine, it's French and fantastic. Based on a real guy, he's a total badass. There's two parts to the films. It's starts off in France but ends up in Canada and the USA (I think). There's some nice prison break action.

Donnie Brasco is great. Based in New York about a cop who infiltrates the Mafia. Based on a true story.

Of course there's all the LA based gangster films that inspired San Andreas, Boyz in The Hood, Menace II Society...

Anyone recognise this guy on the left in San Andreas? He's a ped that walks around Las Venturas strip. The guy in the green/mustard shirt. Instead of a circle on his shirt, he has a square. lol

The Sopranos is definitely the closest tv show to GTA for me. There's loads of scenes that made me think "wow, that totally reminds me of something from GTA".

As for movies, apart from all the obvious Scarface/Goodfellas/snatch etc, I think Heat is a pretty good comparison.

Boulevard Nights (the Mexican "Boys in the Hood") follows a young East Los Angeles teen named Chuco who belongs to a street gang called VGV (Varrio Grande Vista). It is a must watch. It gives the viewer a pretty accurate look into the Hispanic youth gang life in Los Angeles. This film should remind you of areas in San Andreas such as El Corona, East Los Santos and the gangs Varrio Los Aztecas and Los Santos Vagos

I remember the movie Payback with Mel Gibson seeming to be a pretty big influence on GTA3. I mean, the idea of a revenge story isn't all that uncommon, but the way the game follows the movie is pretty spot on, not to mention the similarities of the aesthetic style of the movie and the game.

This.

Which I think is a bit of shame that considering the title of the game, it isn't a little more about Grand Theft Auto. If there was a mission that was a bit more like this film (original or remake), instead of side mission import/export then it would make the game a little better.

-New Jack City,Wesley Snipes in this movie reminds me on CJ(by the look) and Big Smoke (by the character). Also Carter Block in this movie looked just like Crack palace in San Andreas.
-Lakeview Terrace.Samuel L Jackson was just like Tenpenny in SA(lol).
-Sons of Anarchy. I read on this forum that TLAD was heavily based on this series so i bought first season out of curiosity and i like it.Recently watched 4th season.

Someone already mentioned The Wire, a brilliant show and definitely reminiscent of GTA. Also, for all the fans of the series, I'd recommend watching the movies Brooklyn's Finest, Training Day, Collateral, The Town, Law Abiding Citizen, Street Kings, 16 Blocks, Assault On Precinct 13, The Fast & Furious series... the list goes on.

Well,Boyz n the hood was GREAT and meaningful at some scenes.I will always remember what Furious teached his son.
And it was a huge inspiration to San Andreas, just like what Scarface was to Vice City.
