Hi there

I own a nearly ten year old PS2, every game I own has a slight disc scrape on the laser, but only the San Andreas game has the ultimate problem of not always reading.

What I would like to know from anyone that has had this problem, was it only just that game in particular or did other games have the same problem as SA, or were they just little scrape noises here and there when loading areas or menu selection options?

What happened in the longrun?

I own only a handful of games that I like for specific reasons, and obviously with a console showing these signs, from viewing some youtube videos it appears some people have had success with cleaning the laser and some haven't. I don't have much option other than to eventually purchase a second hand older or newer model. I think the price of this old console second hand is far too expensive. I do own a HD wire for the newer HD LCD tv, it only displayed black and white, according to the description on Amazon Uk it was for the PS2/PS3. Since they don't sell those old Cathade ray-tube televisions it doesn't seem worth paying a little too much for an old console with almost few of these televisions available.

Get something like this http://www.d-skin.com/
It's a "skin" that goes over the read side of the disc to protect it from scratches.

The discs don't have any scratches, though I did notice a few light ones on the SA disc. To solve this problem, I would either need to attempt to clean the laser or just recycle this console, and purchase a new one what few are available or a good second hand one which I want to avoid doing.

If I don't do anything to solve the problem, the disc(s) I have will only end up with more little scratches and eventually damage them.

You said "...every game I own has a slight disc scrape on the laser..." I think you mean on the laser read side of the disc.
The scrapes are scratches, they are one in the same just with varying degrees.
The discs don't get those scratches from the laser lens being dirty it's from the wobble. As the disc spins it kind of wobbles around because of the balance of the disc, usually cause by the printing of the label.

Yes obviously the laser read side.

Update: Now none of the CD's I have play, Driv3r, SA, MGS2 Sons of Liberty, or the Making of dvd, The Getaway, and Black Monday sequel, Atari Anthology - classic games, shame no remake of the first space shooter games from 1962 or 1971 computer space.

Any disc in the PS2 just vibrates and scrapes the inside disc compartment, and not forgetting once you reset the console, the eject button's blue light has a delay of turning on compared with the power green light. Could it be also the disc drive has a fault with it..

I just got out my old Playstation out of a storage box, a little dusty and dirty confused.gif , and tried to play Driver 2, the disc 1 doesn't work. LOL! Got that game back in December 2000. The memory card I had with the saves for that game stop working about three years back. The console is still working fine after having got it back in December 1998. £150 with four games, V Rally, Heart of Darkness, a WWF wrestling game, and Premier Manager 98. Could invest £5 for a new game and a memory card for the PS1.

I do own an Xbox with Driv3r, tends to be unstable on that console just froze up on me today, and the GTA pack, that is why I wanted to keep an old generation consoles for as long as possible and with having a cathade ray tube television for the good display. Though now that I can't play a few other PS2 games, bit of dissapointment. I walked past a PS2 slimline in a second hand shop, asked how much it was, the person there was charging £35, on Amazon UK you can get it a few quid/pounds cheaper. I dont think its worth that price, should be £15. How can these old consoles have value when the televisions you need for good display aren't on sale anymore. mad.gif

Long read...
