Yes obviously the laser read side.
Update: Now none of the CD's I have play, Driv3r, SA, MGS2 Sons of Liberty, or the Making of dvd, The Getaway, and Black Monday sequel, Atari Anthology - classic games, shame no remake of the first space shooter games from 1962 or 1971 computer space.
Any disc in the PS2 just vibrates and scrapes the inside disc compartment, and not forgetting once you reset the console, the eject button's blue light has a delay of turning on compared with the power green light. Could it be also the disc drive has a fault with it..
I just got out my old Playstation out of a storage box, a little dusty and dirty

, and tried to play Driver 2, the disc 1 doesn't work. LOL! Got that game back in December 2000. The memory card I had with the saves for that game stop working about three years back. The console is still working fine after having got it back in December 1998. £150 with four games, V Rally, Heart of Darkness, a WWF wrestling game, and Premier Manager 98. Could invest £5 for a new game and a memory card for the PS1.
I do own an Xbox with Driv3r, tends to be unstable on that console just froze up on me today, and the GTA pack, that is why I wanted to keep an old generation consoles for as long as possible and with having a cathade ray tube television for the good display. Though now that I can't play a few other PS2 games, bit of dissapointment. I walked past a PS2 slimline in a second hand shop, asked how much it was, the person there was charging £35, on Amazon UK you can get it a few quid/pounds cheaper. I dont think its worth that price, should be £15. How can these old consoles have value when the televisions you need for good display aren't on sale anymore.
Long read...
