Speaking of animal cloning, I hear they're cloning a wooly mammoth. It's expected to be hatched in 2014. Pretty interesting stuff.

Something has gone terribly wrong here already.

The fact that mammals don't lay eggs could have something to do with it. lol.gif

Apparently, it is thought that some creatures of the species still exist, but it's very rare isn't far from extincion, which is a real shame. I hope George sleeps easy.

And then we will clone more and more of extinct animals!

Yep, like the crazy scientist who plans to turn a chicken to T-Rex

It sucks that he died, but that's life. Species die, species evolve, et cetera.

The problem with animals going extinct is that our species caused the death of them, and if you've ever taken an ecology class you'd know that each and every species served a particular role that can make its environment extremely unstable if not fulfilled. That's why environmental organizations make such a big deal out of extinction and over-population. It's not life when a human causes it, it's incredibly irregular, and needs to stop being looked at with attitudes like that.

I have nothing against you, and I'm sorry to go off on you like that, but when people treat things like this with such a casual attitude it angers me.

Hum, you are aware that species have been extinguished long before human involvement, right? While we may be speeding up the extinction of some species, we are in no way responsible for ALL of the species that have been extinguished.

While I do agree that species serve an important role in maintaining the balance of an eco system, the systems themselves will adapt to the lack of those species. Or do you think that the world has, right now, the same species that it has had since things started evolving? Nature doesn't give a crap what survives and what does not. If it wasn't fit enough for the environment, it will perish.

At the rate of scientific progress we have been making, we should be able to clone him along with other types of extinct species in the near future.

You know what that leads to, right? Cloning will only result in more indivuduals with more than 99.99% of matching genetic constitution. So you got Lonesome George 2-xy. That's not the point and there is no point doing it that way. At least two individuals of differnt genders must be alive or you will reach a dead end anyway. And even with a male and a female individual left, the genetic variation is so limited, you would actually breed the A team of genetic diseases. Look what happened to the leopards.

That speeding up of extinction is what I have a problem with. I understand that some species go extinct without human interaction, and I realize that that's how natural selection works. Humans have caused the death of a massive amount of a certain species, and other humans excuse the actions with "that's life" is what I feel is wrong. But there's a difference with the animal's death being natural, and the killing of animals by our own species in extreme numbers, such as with what happened to The Pinta Island Tortoise, or what had happened during the Holocene extinction. The part about ecology was indeed unnecessary, and ignorant of me.
