I'm from Atlantic Canada, so cursing is part of my genetic programming.
I used to get detention all the time in first grade for swearing, because the same fat kid would always rat me out.
I swear quite a bit, but I try and tone it down when the situation dictates (e.g. with my family, kids, work). Around my mother and grandparents, I will swear, but I will keep it to very basic swears; I would never say f*ck, for example, in their presence (or c*nt, but I think that's implied).

I would say it's T.V, video games, and other forms of media that caused it. Another possibility would be that they hear other kids saying these words (most likely older children they go to school with) causing a chain-like reaction. When I was in second/third grade, I knew most of these words, but I would very rarely say them, and if I did, I was mad. I never did it to act "cool" or "tough", until I got in 5th/6th grade. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if I heard these kids speaking in that manner; we live in a world where 7 year old kids play GTA, CoD, and other games above their age. When I was younger, I would mostly play games such as Burnout/other racing games. It wasn't until 4th grade when I started to get into violent games. CoD was the first, and then in 6th grade, I discovered Grand Theft Auto. After that point, I played rated M games. Times have changed, and with the popularity of CoD/GTA increasing, younger crowds of kids will stat playing these games. The only people that can stop this are the parents of the kids. Age laws don't help, as kids will just get their parents to purchase it for them. Overall, media caused this. Young girls now learn how to dress from watching Jersey Shore, young boys now learn how to act/talk from CoD/Southpark. My two cents.

| QUOTE (Tyler @ Monday, Jun 18 2012, 20:03) | | Anyway, the folks who say "I wish I was born in a different generation" are being just as contrived as the folks who say "like if you think this is REAL music" on youtube. Seriously, you live in 2012. You have access to almost everything from the past, you have good technology, you have the internet and most of all you never know what's going to happen next. Get the f*ck over yourself and live in the world. |
Nah bro, I'm pretty sure the 80s was the best time to be alive. None of this Justine Beaver or Lady Gagger crap, only REAL music (there was no pop music then you see, only stuff like Guns N Roses), REAL video games (OMG retro games are way better than MW2) and GOOD movies (have you even seen Scarface? Nobody my age has). People were all mature and did none of this attention seeking stuff you see today like on facebook. It doesn't matter that I was born nearly a decade after it ended I KNOW all that stuff from my parents and what I've seen on the internet and TV. God, today's generation is sh*t and I'm so much better than these lowly people. Yours sincerely, a surprisingly high number of kids on these forums.

Some crazy world we live in where parents of today will encourage their kids to fight each other. If parents encourage their kids to do that, what else will they not encourage? I won't be surprise if one of them starts stealing and the parents don't blame themselves for not giving their kids discipline, instead blame it on others. Heard a story once (forgot if it's from this forum or somewhere else). This guy was at the supermarket with his friend and a kid was running all over the place while the kid's mom was down the aisle not giving a damn on what her kid is doing. The kid then ran up to the guy and his friend, started fooling around and all of a sudden bite the guy's leg, draws blood, and starts laughing. The guy who got bit, looked at his wound and started yelling, oh sh*t did he got it?! His friend knew his was acting, started acting too by also yelling, do you think he got it?! The kid then started crying and mommy comes running from down the aisle and started yelling at the guy and his friend, creates a scene, and threats to call the cop for hurting her kid. As the guy was in line checking out his item, the mom still behind continue to yell and say your going to jail and other BS. So the guy said to her, you better go get your kid check out cause he (the guy) got AIDS (he really don't have AIDS). Well that shut her up, and as both of them got out of the market, mom sat on the curb and started crying while the guy and his friend went on their way. Kids think they're f*cking badman when they swear. When I was like six years old, I was at a friend's house and was excited to learn the word 'wanker' which had been graffitied on a nearby wall. I'm sure my parents had similar experiences and if I ever spawn, then my kid(s) will do the same. Round here, it's very unusual to find teenagers smoking weed/tobacco, popping pills or drinking booze before they're fifteen, as it should be, drugs at a very young age f*ck people up. I don't buy any arguments about there being more respect in the past - sure words like c*nt and dick are less offensive than they used to be, however racial and homophobic slurs are now generally taboo, and the 'no dogs no blacks no Irish' signs of the 1960s and earlier would cause a massive international scandal nowadays, for example.
