It turns out that someone's been playing a game of Civilisation II for 10 years and has gone so far into the future that the earth has been engaged in a 1700 year long nuclear war. The player has claimed that the ice caps have melted 20 times and hardly any of the map is hospitable. I find it fascinating that someone's actually played the game for that long considering its been out for over 15 years. Really cool story.

That's rather depressing that someone has played civ 2 for ten years!

No it isn't. I've played 1942 arcade since I was 12. I just happen to delete saves from games every time I stop playing them.
This guy decided to jsut play the same save everytime he decided to mess around with Civ II.

I've been playing the same VC save since 2005.

I definitely need to do something like this in Civilization V.

Just...It looks amazing to see it span over the years.I love trying to follow the actual history and colonizing the civilization's place.

Nah, he hasn't be playing it for 10 years straight its just hes been on the same game all those years. It was more for observation and its a brilliant one at that. The fact it leads to nuclear war, 3 superpower rule, extreme climate change and complete dictatorship rule then its just funny that a piece of software just thats got coding based on human variables just ends up like that and even more interestingly how the player tries his best for eutopia but just can't achieve it.

Even with a person control who really wants to make a complete eutopia is still having to have a dictorship to send all resources to fight war. There's even guerrilla uprisings. Its not proving anything or making an accurate guess because obviously the coding can not account for all different ideas/beliefs and variables about human society to create an accurate view. However on just general direction, it just points to war.

He's uploaded his save game online so everyone can try and achieve his objective through different methods. Methinks that Civ II sales may rise now haha. Hell, I'm tempted to buy it.

I am no scientist but how long could the earth withstand nuclear war. If were using H bombs, quite a few going off the chances of a chain reaction occurring increases. I just feasibly can't see a nuclear war lasting very long, just all that destruction and radioactivity being unless. There would be mass panic amoung the world.

If you haven't, you should check out the film, _The Road_.
Super grim.

Re that game. I would've thought he'd see the same patterns reoccurring and it'd get boring.
Of course, the only solution is one world government and mind-stapling.

Damn that film put me in a right downer!

Really takes some dedication and housekeeping to keep a game-save for ten years.

Turn based strategy sucks reminds me of board games to much! so pre 1993 ive only ever enjoyed 1 turn based strategy for any length of time and that was alpha centuri.

Alpha Centauri was a spinoff to the Civ games. I like that if I build my civilization on a giant mountain, in that game, I can shoot up solar flares or something and drown everyone else though, then shoot up something else and lower the sea level again and reap the benefits of dead civilizations.

@Iminicus,
here's the link to the save from his subreddit: https://s3.amazonaws.com/noahm/civilization-2.zip
and here's a patch for it to run on windows 7 64 bit, just in case: https://s3.amazonaws.com/noahm/civ2xp64patcher.zip

I can't get into turn based games but that's impressive. 10 years. I can only play that long with only select games. The GTA series included.
