Just recently over the last couple of days whenever I use my PC for games, java, flash or even rendering a video in Sony Vegas after a short amount of time I get a complete lockup with the spinning circle and then blue screen. My system specs are as follows.

QUOTE
Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Basic (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2 (6002.vistasp2_gdr.101014-0432)
           Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
               BIOS: Default System BIOS
          Processor: AMD Phenom™ 9650 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
             Memory: 3326MB RAM
Page File: 1806MB used, 5058MB available

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti
    Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce GTX 550 Ti
        DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
      Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1244&SUBSYS_15573842&REV_A1
  Display Memory: 2400 MB
Dedicated Memory: 992 MB
    Shared Memory: 1407 MB
    Current Mode: 1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (60Hz)

Any ideas what might be causing it? To my knowledge no updates were applied recently before the issues/

Try uninstalling and reinstalling both both DirectX and your graphics drivers.

Yeah I know, I should downgrade back to XP, but I don't want to risk losing files and whatnot, will try and report back.

You could do an upgrade to 7 without losing your files or settings. It's fancy like Vista and fast like XP.

True, but I don't particularly want to shell out for it to be honest.

Look in C:\Windows\Minidump zip any files you have there and upload them some place and give me the link. I have a debugger that should shed some light on it.
You might want to also try doing a memory test http://www.memtest.org/

Ok, still no joy. Here's an example of what exactly happens, in the hopes it will give someone an idea.

I start a game, for instance Minecraft or Overgrowth, everything runs fine for about 2 minutes, then the game freezes. Overgrowth is in a window so I can see it crashed, I cannot x out of it nothing happens, can't ctrl alt delete nothing happens, my desktop is still active for a few minutes and then it bluescreens.

You should ask wolf if underclocking your ram might work as a temporary solution. The only other idea I have is tweeking your powering options.

Despite uninstalling an re-installing my drivers, rolling them back seems to have done the trick for whatever reason? Anyhow, thanks for everyone's help!

As I suggested before; http://www.memtest.org/
The easiest thing to do is select: Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
Unzip and burn that ISO to disc. If you're not 100% sure how to do that just ask.
Restart and boot from the disc you just made and let it run. I suggest at least 3-6 passes, this can take several hours. Let this run over night, while at work or school, go watch a couple movies, whatever.
If it shows any errors it might be the RAM. Try re-seating it or moving it to different slots, which ever just be sure to test it again.

There is a USB key method, keep in mind it'll wipe that USB stick/key/thumbdrive clean first. Plus you need to make sure your mobo supports booting from USB, but if it's new enough say the last 3 years then you should be ok.

Ok, if I can avoid having my PC out of action for a day It would be best, I am still having problems, but it seems to happen at heavy usage. For instance I can play overgrowth on a small level, but if I try to load a larger one it crashes, or if I try to play Minecraft and watch youtube videos at the same time.
