Hi there, I have an early 2011 macnook pro, today it started running slow, so I shut it down, when i turned it back on, it took ages to load, I then ran Verify Disk in Disk Utility and i got:

Invalid volume file count
(It should be 566128 instead of 566102)

But do I need to repair with disc util from the recovery HD? Or is it ok to just ignore it? (sounds stupid just saying it blush.gif )
Also, if i do the repair, will i lose any files or should everything be the same before I fix it?
Thanks in advance.

I'm running OS X lion and if you need to know anything else just let me know.

Not sure about that, but it's unlikely to happen.

sorry about this, i have one last question, the laptop seems to be running fine for the moment, and I'm planning on upgrading to Mountain Lion next month, But should getting mountain lion fix this problem, or do you know if the two are completely separate issues?

Every Mac owner needs to have DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
It's not cheap ($100) but it should fix this problem, and others you didn't know you had. I've seen it take a Mac that was booting and then bomb on the desktop back to working perfectly.

There is no promise that installing ML will fix this, in fact I wouldn't even try to upgrade the OS like that unless I knew the one I had already was working perfectly. Other wise all you're going to get is more problems even some that can come up while it's updating which could cause you to lose all of your files.

And this is no matter if you're on Windows or Mac; if you're that worried about losing your files then you really need to get a drive to back everything up to. Again when installing a major update like that to an OS, backup before you start in case something bad happens. Even if your system was perfect and clean, something bad can happen when the update is running.

hi, thanks for the replies, you're very helpful, i suppose i should try and fix it now so, you can lock this now if you want. Thanks again smile.gif

Edit: just in case you care, a mandatory update came to my laptop, and once it was finished, i ran verify disk again, and everything was perfect, so i didn't need to do anything, thanks anyway tho lol.gif

That doesn't mean you don't still have problems. Disk First Aid can only do so much, even less when the OS is being used.
