[Q] Modding IV - Is it difficult?

Are car replacements as easy as SA?

Hi All,

I love the Emergency vehicle upgrades/updates that PC users work into the GTA games. I've never done it myself though. As an XBox user, I never really delved into PC gaming (and assumed that any modding would require a lot of technical/coding/etc. knowledge).

However, I did have a PC copy of San Andreas gathering dust for a while, and yesterday I got bored and installed it. I looked up general basic edits (replacing police cars and adding that emergency lights mod) and it wasn't really that difficult at all. A little frustrating at first, but now I can change cars using GGMM and it's pretty much just a case of dragging and dropping a few lines of text. Shockingly easy.

So what I'm wondering is - My 360 got the dreaded red rings, and seen as GTA is the only game I play, I wasn't planning on buying another 360 until V comes out. So I was considering picking up a copy of IV for PC (the online videos of the game, with people's custom emergency vehicles look great).

What I really want to know is, is it difficult to do this kinda stuff with IV? As simple as SA was to play around with, I can't help but get the feeling that IV would be much more difficult? (Now I should point out, I don't want to make my own cars, or change any of the city or stuff. I just want to look for ready-made cars to replace cars that are already in the game (Police, Fire, Ambulance, mostly).

Can anyone give me any idea what I'm getting into here before I buy a copy of it (if I can't add cars easily enough I'm not really all that interested in getting it, to be honest). Would I be getting in way over my head, or is it similar to San Andreas in that it's actually extremely simple and you can be changing cars out in the space of half an hour?

Cheers, and apologies if this is done to death. I took a quick flick through the forum, but didn't see a thread that I thought would be similar.

EDIT: Also, apologies if this is in the wrong place.

It's pretty easy to do it mate, you gotta get Spark IV for installing car mods, weapons, etc. With that program you can also install textures in the vehicles (if they are able to support liveries). Here there's a tutorial of using Spark IV:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef4aN_MYp_4

When you install a mod you also have to install the "handling" "carcols" and "vehicle.ide" that uses to come in the readme file of the mod. Installing these will make the vehicle mod working right.
For doing that you have to go to your GTA IV directory --> common --> data, and look for these files I said, open them with the notepad, look for the line of the car you have installed and replace it with the line that comes in the mod readme.

By the way, if you want to play as a police officer I recommend you a mod called LCPD:FR

Hope it helped wink.gif

Thanks a lot for the reply, RoadRunner.

Seems fairly similar to San Andreas, then, so (which is a good thing. of course!).

Can I ask, is there any 'better version' of the game to buy? I Had "Version 2" of San Andreas so I had to mess around for a while downgrading it to "Version 1" before I could install any mods.

Should I just buy the Original GTA IV? or is there any added benefit to buying the 'Episodes From' pack (aside from the obvious additional content that comes with those games)?

I forgot to say that you should to upgrade to patch 1.0.7.0, just download it and run the installer: http://www.rockstargames.com/downloads#/?collection=9

And well, EFLC adds more missions, weapons and vehicles, so if you can buy the complete edition much better smile.gif

Cheers.

I think I'll just get the original version of IV. I don't think there's anything I'd miss from the EFLC pack.

I'll order it online. I'll probably be back annoying the life and soul out of everyone in a week's time, wondering where it all went wrong for me. Haha. Cheers for your help Road Runner. I do appreciate it.

Enjoy it man smile.gif but a last thing, EFLC works better with mods, or I think so.

Hey again,

Well, I got IV: EFLC in the post today and took a blast at it. My PC can only run it at it's lowest settings, but I'll invest in a better graphics card after I see if I can get this working properly.

Pretty much, playing the Ballad of Gay Tony, so far I've managed to swap out one of the police cars to an ELS-enabled police car. My difficulty is, however, getting ELS to work.

I've downloaded ELS V.6 and I've copied the files over to the EFLC main folder, and put the came on, but to no avail. It doesn't make any difference. Anyone know where I'm going wrong here? I'm watching Youtube tutorials and such and they all seem to be doing the same thing but I'm not having any luck. Most people who are modding it though, seem to be doing so to the Steam version of the game (whereas mine is a disc version). Not sure if that has any bearing on anything?
