So I just installed the game, and I try and play, and on the second screen with the white text on the black background it gets stuck refuses to go futher.
How do I fix this?

Well this is what I meant in the first place. That xlive error most likely comes to pirated versions of the game.

I managed to fix it, but now it just gets stuck on the 2nd screen?

If you have an original game, install these
GFWL update
Patch 7

and delete the file xlive.dll from the game directory, that is the folder where GTAIV.exe is located.

There is nothing wrong with buying games used-after all, Why do you think places like Waterfront Mission, Salvation Army, Harvest House, and other thrift stores are in business-they sell used stuff that people donate..As long as you buy the legal game from a legal store which sells used merchandise OR in this case, a friend-there is nothing wrong with it-IT IS LEGAL-this coming from a certified Law Enforcement Officer...Just a friendly heads up. On-topic, Make sure ALL drivers are up to date for the Video card, DX, Sound card, etc. Make sure you have the latest SP for Windows-ie. SP3 if XP, SP2 if Vista, OR SP1 if 7..

ALready installed the patch. Just did GFWL but still gets tuck on that 2nd screen

In India, people sell games in black market. They too sell two DVDs but they aren't legitimate. Also, I don't know anything about the law in USA.

@Splog: Re-Install the game. If it doesn't works, ask your friend if it works for him and IF not, then I will again place my words.

All drivers are up to date, and I have sp1 installed for win 7

It does work for my friend, I saw it.

Can you post a picture of the problem? I saw your first post and I didn't understand it well, does it happens when you enter Roman's cab or when you reach his home? Also, if it's possible to post your friend's PC Specs.

I just unintalled the game. I'm going to reinstal it tomorrow.
But when you launch the game, it goes to the first copyright screen, then the second. It doesn't actually go to the game menu.

Friends specs I don't know, but his laptop is a few years old.

If that's not helpful, I'll get a screencap if it doesnt work when I reinstall it

Close all the background programs and try to play the game. See if GTA 4 is taking too much CPU.
