Hi fellas,
I wanted to get a list of songs you think best illustrate great guitar solos and/or piano pieces (technically. artistically, historically etc).
Any genre welcome, no limitations. My son is studying both guitar and piano and I want to expose him to as much of it as possible to help develop his own style.

I know there are a lot of musicians and music aficionados around GTAF, I like and appreciate music, but I know I'm not qualified to help him much in this area.
Any help appreciated. Cheers.

Well for me if you are looking for guitar solos I say you should look for pieces done by the likes of Brian May, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and so on.

For piano solos, personally, I would be looking at the Classical music range. Say pieces done by the likes of Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, straying outside of Classical maybe even the likes of Elton John.

But for the guitar part the list is pretty much endless if you include say The Rolling Stones, Guns & Roses, ZZ Top, Scorpions, AC/DC, and on and on.

I'm a little late, but Eddie Hazel is one of the more underrated guitarists out there. Check out Maggot Brain.



I'm also a bit surprised no one threw in early Heart.



Then throw in Brocas Helm to add variety.



Finally, tell him to check out everything by Jack White and all the project's he's been in. White's a solid guitar, and his mix of genres like blues and garage rock is a sound I think only he'd be able to pull off this well.



Hope your son has fun learning. Is there any particular genre he enjoys more than anything else?

I don't know how old your son is, but nobody is too old to have their mind blown by Eddie Van Halen:


Stevie Ray Vaughan's rendition of Jimi Hendrix's 'Little Wing' is perhaps the most beautiful piece of guitar goodness ever recorded:


Then there's Gary Moore, who fits somewhere inbetween Eddie and Stevie. This is 'End of the World'


Yngwie Malmsteen's 'Black Star' - incredible:



It would be rude not to mention that these men (together with the aforementioned) are responsible for most of the world's great guitar solos and pieces of guitar-oriented music; Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Angus Young (AC/DC), Matt Bellamy (Muse), James Hetfield (Metallica), Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits), Toni Iommi (Black Sabbath), Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple), Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne), Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead), Dimebag Darrel (Pantera) and John Petrucci (Dream Theater). Also of note are solo artists: Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satrini, Eric Johnson and Buckethead.

@Tyler: He's not really committed, but with piano he tends to be inspired by gaming soundtracks eg: Final Fantasy etc, orchestral and more experimental. He writes and plays his own compositions. He hasn't found his preference in guitar yet.

@Marlowe: My son is 14 now.

Already I mentioned EVH, he being Edward Van Halen mentioned above ^( and playing the TC this weekend I believe) has said that he loves the little guitar intros he does to songs, like that of Little Guitars and Women In Love, rather then the VH song as a whole, they all come about due to little "noodling" ideas, and if you're learning guitar, that's something to take away from a true legend in the business. Piano is a good area to cover as well. I love George Winston's song Thanksgiving, it's about his childhood he says, and it's a master-classic, check it out!!

A helpful comment about the tuning and how it's been played by Ed live;

'Ed actually never played this song live on an acoustic guitar. He played the song "Little Guitars" on the Dave Petschulat mini-Les Paul. He never used a capo. On the Roth reunion tour he plays a small scale Frankenstein replica. For the original recording of the intro he used an Ovation classical (same one he used for "Spanish Fly") tuned higher. When he played snippets of this intro in his live guitar solo he played his main guitar in standard tuning.'

The only thing that jumps to my mind is guitar music, but that's only because I hammered it growing up. Now, I'm more of an electronic persuasion but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy it. One of my favourite musicians is a man called Buckethead, who many shrug off as being just a mindless shredder because of their sole exposure to "that song" off Guitar Hero. Not only is that song brilliant, but it nowhere near covers his scope and diversity. Here's a few videos displaying his range, going from shred, to ambient, chill, avant-garde and even funk.









This nowhere near covers it, but if you're son's big into guitar and piano I'm assuming he's heard of Buckethead anyway.
