Just done a quote on this car which came to £7000 sad.gif That's with only third party as well.

Why can the Americans have a huge V8 truck for their first car but us British can barely afford to insure a 1.0 litre in our first couple of driving years.

Because in Britain insurers are evil, drivers are muppets and people claim for naff all.

Put it this way, somebody I know was almost bullied into claiming for whip-lash in an accident that was at 15 mph...

If you want my advice you'll look at Collingwood or Tesco car insurance, both cheap!

...It's an XR3i. If it was a bog-standard Mk3 Escort with a piddling 1.3 OHV engine, then I'd understand the indigence at a £7,000 quote. But tat like the XR3i is even expensive for me to insure, comparatively speaking. Well, lets put it this way- on a limited mileage policy, it would cost more than my Audi, all mods declared, insured for 30,000 miles per year. Or more than my bike, plus track-day cover.

I'll stay away from sporty models then. Mike said in PM take a look at blackbox insurance which sounds interesting.

I thought it was because Insurance companies know we have to slow down to take a corner, where Brits can shove their little 4 bangers around corners all day long tounge.gif

God Bless America. At least we're doing something right.

One of the few reasons I love this country.

I've actually gotten a quote for a 1998 1.4 Honda Civic hatch for about €1800 TPFT, with First Ireland. I'm delighted as TPFT for a 1.0 Polo was €2550 on other insurers. Now it's just a matter of getting a job for the summer.

Have you chosen yet? I am waiting to see what you are buying and starting to laugh at another Ford Ka driver.

I am going to wait until I'm 21 or even 25 to get a car for myself.

I'll just drive my father's car all the time when I get my licence.

I need a job first before I can pay for the insurance and get a car. I'm waiting for a reply after doing a job trial so I could be getting a car very soon. Otherwise it'll be when I'm 18. Anyway what's wrong with a Ford Ka? I know they're a bit of a girls car but don't seem too bad.

Sorry people but don't expect to see a purchase just yet.

EDIT
At least I have some transport with my geared 50cc bike.

Then the Ford Ka driver laughs at you for not even owning a car or being able to drive at all for that matter?

Mate, out of the 6 serious RTCs I've attended 4 were involving a Ka, all of which the occupants were critical (I think one may have died, but I'm not sure as it was LONG ago...) If you want my advice you'll get a recent Fiesta or something, just something which passed Euro NCAP (even the newer Ka) - just avoid the 'egg on wheels' as it was when I was at school!

Spending thousands on a car that isn't much more powerful than a motocross bike or even a lightweight scooter?

Lurch, why don't you come to this country and look how beautiful and big these cars are, maybe you'll be the first one to understand.

And by age of 19 I'll be able to pay my £7k insurance, but what I'm worried about is what I'll do the year after that - it's still the same load of money to pay..

What the f*ck are you talking about? I have no idea where in Croatia you live, but I imagine the cars there don't differ much from any other part of the world (or at least other parts of Europe).

Regardless, laughing at the guy that has the means to transport himself while you're still riding shotgun is somewhat laughable.

So stay in your booster seat til you're in your mid-twenties while the kid in the Ka passes you up in life.

f*ckin kids.

Nah dude, he's a grown-up.

He'll just drive daddy's car, and daddy is a grown-up, so that means he's a grown-up.

You just wait, once he gets his first girlfriend, you won't be laughing anymore!

(but you can keep laughing for the 30-40 years that preclude it)
