Well I've recently passed my test and am starting to look at cars. I wouldn't mind something newer like year 1998+ but I would love an old MK2 Fiesta or similar old small hatchback like an early Golf. I did an insurance quote (3rd party fire and theft) for an '00 Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 worth £800 and the quote was £3700! mercie_blink.gif Back to the point is it a good idea to get an old 80's or 90's car with no power steering and the like? I will assume many are old cars are pretty run down and will need some tlc but my dad can help me with that.

It's a good job you want old skool because that's where the "cheap" quotes are. When I was looking around the cheapest options were basically:

Austin Mini
Austin Metro
VW Beetle
Fiat 126
MK1 Fiesta Popular

I went with a Mini because they hold their value well. The way I see it I'd rather pay more for the car and get cheaper insurance than the other way round. At least this way after the years over I'll have the most valuable side of the cost.

Huge old busses are cheap. Volvos from the 80s, for instance. And girly cars like the ford puma

Thank you for the advice. Trouble is these older cars are getting quite rare so it's just searching through a lot of classifieds and stuff. I'm a bit worried about rust though, I don't want my foot going through the floor.

A Mini is your best bet if you can afford to buy one, look at around £2,000 for a decent one, don't worry if it's the 1.0 or the 1.3 just make sure it's nice and solid. Old fiesta's and stuff are super cool, not sure what they are on the insurance but if you can get classic insurance on them it shouldn't be a problem. Early Golfs seem to be really expensive to insure, even on classic insurance.. Not sure why to be honest, I was thinking of buying one recently but was put off by the insurance, and I'm 19.

Oh and Metro's are awesome, here's mine. tounge.gif

It was a 998 1990 Austin Metro City, I bought it in september for £375 with a years MOT. Since then I've fitted a fast road 1275 engine but it was fairly fun to drive even when standard.

It's costs me £1000 to insure on classic insurance. 3rd party fire and theft, unilimited mileage. This was the best quote I could get on literally ANYTHING so I was very happy, only downside is you get zero no claims bonus if you're on classic policy which sucks, but oh well.

Retro cars are the best if you're young and want something fun, it's a great way to learn how to work on cars too as they're so much simpler than modern stuff.

Don't worry about not having power steering. It can be heavy to park at first but you get used to it, older cars without power steering are normally a lot lighter than newer stuff anyways so it's not too bad.

Oh and rust.. Don't worry, if it's passed it's MOT make sure it had no rust related advisories, if there is something rotten it generally isn't too expensive to get welded as long as it's not spread too far. I've got a hole in my boot I need to sort but it's not an MOT failure.

Cheers Starion I wouldn't mind something like a Metro although I haven't seen one on the road in months! I just need to get a job now to pay for the insurance before I can buy a car. I'll be looking at old Fiesta's, Metro's and Mini's then. Sometime in the future I will likely post my purchase.

Get a Matiz. Totally uncool and cheap and reliable.

Make sure it's not modded with a Halfords spoiler or anything because that will affect your rate.

Or one of these...

If I were you I'd get something newer and more safe since you probably have a high chance of crashing, and you wouldn't want to get squashed into a cube.

Quite the contrary. I'd get something older and bigger so it's easy to work on and has cheap parts since your fist car is likely to be a cheap pice of sh*t that's going to need a lot of work during your ownership of it.

OR you can not make generalizations and just buy whatever suits you and is affordable.

I treat smaller older cars a if they were bikes. Drive them more carefully and make them louder so they hear you before they see you. There's a reason why my bug was straight piped with a stinger.

DON'T GET A CAR AT ALL!
It's the only way to truly be safe.

Most peoples first accidents aren't high-speed wrecks, so I'd rather crunch my bumper and get a new one cheap than pay loads more for a new cars bumper simply because it's new.

Plus if you bump an '89 into a bollard, you feel a lot less sh*tty than if it were a new car.

Seen this online for €1'000. Wish I had the money just to say I've owned one of these.
