It's funny how 'virality' works. 2 guys 1 hammer, that lady who threw puppies into the river, and this happen all the time, there are also more than likely hundreds of videos of this stuff uploaded every week, yet you all decide to settle on one video, get mad at it, and give up in a week or two. Where's all the support for The Invisible Children, do any of you even remember that video of the kids ganging up on the Asian kid? It's great that people feel terrible about something, but if the public's focus or dedication lasted more than a week or was stronger than just typing up how bad something is respectively, we'd probably be a lot better at combating this stuff. | QUOTE | | Nothing is achieved by making more people watch it. |
You're wrong. Many people here haven't yet seen this, and it spreads the word.

| QUOTE (Robinski @ Monday, May 14 2012, 15:27) | | You know what I hate (apart from child abuse, I'd like to think that goes without saying)? It's people who spread around stuff like this under the guise of doing good when in reality it's the worst kind of slacktivism and really just a way of justifying rubbernecking. It's this sort of sh*t that results in me seeing mutilated animals, people with hideous deformities and horrific images on my facebook feed regularly. The worst part of it is that the images that get attached to the causes are usually not of what the actual "cause" is. | This is the smartest thing posted in this topic, and I'm accounting for all future posts.
People need to learn the difference between raising awareness to a cause and actually doing something. There is a difference.

And now that you know about it, what are you going to do about it? Oh right, nothing. | You're completely right about me, and this may contradict my original point, but I do think spreading it accomplishes something. The spreading of this helps introduce people to cruelty like this. As small as it may be there are a number of people who are changed by this. When this woman gets out of jail more people will despise her, and possibly make her life a living hell. I don't think she deserves everything people are cursing onto her, but it's great that she'll be a miserable person after all this is done.

Note: I haven't and won't watch the video. There is literally nothing t gain from doing so. | Perfectly summed up exactly what i was going to say, i too am not watching the video. Why? Well it doesn't raise awareness at all, i think anyone over the age of 12 is very well aware of child abuse, all this does is get YT views for people posting it and the responses, and it will sit in our minds for a few minutes to be replaced by something else. My issue with these issues is that there are millions of problems in the world and everyone has their opinion on what is the worst, some people are lobbying for more support for sex slaves, others are raising money for cancer, others for child abuse. There is so many issues in the world and these little movements practically do sh*t all now that most people are already aware.

we do.
if you think we don't, then you've been way over-sheltered and underexposed to the world at large... | Think he was getting at the fact that stuff like this is rare, fortunately. The reason we hear about it so much is because of the news, and stuff like this makes news because of the shock value to it. If this was truly such a twisted, sick world, then this would have just been another video that got a few mentions and forgotten about.
