| QUOTE (EscoLehGo @ Monday, May 14 2012, 14:32) | | I agree with the guy who said GTA is a 9 when you include the Episodic content, but alone? No alone it's an 8 at best, at least compared to the other games. If it didn't have such impressive predecessors I'd rate it higher because I'd have nothing to compare it to but Saints Row | GTA IV was a 9-10 in my book. It's really not fair to compare IV to anything they've done before. Because the topic is about 'quality' SA was 'quantity over quality.' Just look at Vice City, there were so many things that were better in Vice City (Ped animations, car destruction, etc.) that were taken out of SA, just so they could make a huge map. IV was 'quality over quantity.' Along with the fact that RAGE was Rockstar's newborn baby, and they didn't know exactly what the engine could handle at that point in time. V will probably be quality=quantity (hopefully) I don't want V to sacrifice certain aspects just so we can have a huge map, and a bunch of pointless things to do (like in SA) If I wanted to do pointless stupid activities, I'd play Saints Row

I truly know of no game more deserving of a 10 than GTA IV. Hell, I would sooner say GTA IV was underrated than I would say it was overrated, and it's already the highest rated game of the last DECADE. |

No way in hell. | Best usage of a gif this century ty you sir, that is just great. You made my day, thank you.

I agree with the others, GT have bricks in their heads when it comes to reviews. However, I've been watching some game play and MP3 is not what I expected, especially considering how much hype rockstar spoiled the game with. The tech emphasis in the rockstar trailers are no where near what the actual game quality is, (IMO). They talk about how fluid their animations are, but Max practically turns at a 45 degree angle! (This is only speculation). Anyway, I don't believe GTA V will cease to amaze us, it's their prize game and like the said "the most ambitious one yet!" Maybe they were too busy on GTA and didn't work on MP3 as much!

I'm the guy who said GTA IV would get a 9 when you include the Episodes, but without the Episodes it's a different story. I said earlier that the highest score I'd give to GTA IV alone would 8.5/10, so me and you are pretty much on the same page there. GTA IV, as great a game as it is, just had a bit too much flaws and shortcomings to deserve a 10, or even a 9. 8.5 is still a great score for a game to have, so before anybody has a dig at my views, please consider this, regardless of how much you love GTA IV. And that is a very good point you made about GTA IV having impressive predecessors - if this was not the case, then yeah I would probably have given GTA IV a higher score myself. I'd give Vice City 10/10 and San Andreas 9.5/10 for very good reasons, as those two games pretty much re-wrote the history and legacy of the GTA series. GTA IV just did not have that kind of effect for me, but it is still a great game indeed, Saints Row is not anywhere close to it. If GTAV is around the quality level of the past games like IV, SA, VC, and III then I’m all good.

| QUOTE (The_Mario_Man @ Tuesday, May 15 2012, 01:20) | ...So... does anybody actually play the games themselves to form their own opinion of them nowadays?
For all I care, every reviewer could give Max Payne 3, GTA V, and any other game for that matter the lowest scores in history, but so long as I think that it's worth the cash I put up for it, what the hell do their numbers matter?
You probably shouldn't be trusting any of these major reviewers to begin with. See: the whole Kane & Lynch 6/10 debacle. |
Well, it's sort of important to be able to know whether a game will be worth it before you buy it. The only way to feel certain in that regard (without spoiling it by watching gameplay on YouTube or something) is to hear what others have to say about it. Trailers and marketing material are, by their very nature, not going to be unbiased sources for telling whether the game will be good. You can glean certain things from them, and it's what makes you interested in a game in the first place, but they won't tell you whether it actually lives up to your expectations. But it's impossible to totally form your own opinion about a game and whether it will be worth buying if you haven't bought it yet, so it can be necessary to look into what others have to say about it. However, I tend to not bother with reviews from gaming sites, I take that info from several sources and I take it with a grain of salt that they may have different tastes than me, although if I hear similar things across the board chances are I will end up having a similar opinion. There will be times when my taste differs from the majority, but overall it's good to just skim the internet just to make sure the game doesn't have obvious, egregious flaws (if, like you mentioned, every single person on the net gave a bad review for the game, I'm probably going to start doubting it'll be any good, to say the least). So my advise is to make use of all sources of reviews, from paid reviews to random people on the internet to people you know in real life, and to also use your own judgement. You can't totally rely on your own opinion in this situation, though.

I know a ton of people that don't agree with that. |
I also don't agree with that GTA IV was great, if you didn't think so that's fine but honestly when you first played it you were like the rest of us. This post has been edited by mikkenugent on Tuesday, May 15 2012, 02:03
