I always loved to go around like a psycho with the chainsaw in Vice City / San Andreas and cut people up. Especially in Vice City it was cool because of the increased blood. Is there a reason why they left it out of GTAIV, along with the katana?

Good question. I wondered with the chainsaw whether it was due to technological limitations?

The katana though I have no idea - they had the knife, so why not?

Another is the flamethrower. A GTA staple from the original Grand Theft Auto that was not featured in IV. This I don't understand, molotovs were in there, and the firetruck had a workable hose, so the technology was there for that.

The mind boggles - lets just hope they return in GTA V.

A little off topic but does anyone make a flame thrower anymore?

The chainsaw was fun in vice city, but what I missed most was the silenced pistol, that seemed like it would be right up Niko's ally.

these weapons were left out because they did not fit the theme of GTA IV. I loved both weapons also, especially the Katana, and hope they return in V, but in IV, i just can't see them working, as much as i like them.

Imagine if you're watching a Dirty Harry film, and he suddenly whips out a chainsaw and starts cutting people with it.

I agree with the silenced pistol though - Niko strikes me as a man who'd know the value of stealth, and IV had a disappointing level of stealth in it, be it traditional or social.

I agree with you.

The image of an Eastern European war vet immigrant running around with a chainsaw on a mass killing spree may sound like a story that Fox News would love to report on, but it doesn't fit in GTA IV.

The chainsaw worked well in Vice City because the game was built around mafia movies, the most notable one being Scarface, which included a chainsaw scene, so that works.

With San Andreas there were wooded areas with timber yards, and what would a timer yard be like without the proper tools? So, chainsaws worked well there too (amongst other reasons I'm sure).

Throwing LCS, VCS and Chiantown Wars together here, they were built around drug empires, gangs, hard hitting/ruthless mafia families etc. so the vicious chainsaw works well there too for vicious situations.

If we have timber yards/woodland areas in V and ruthless gangs and mafia families, then I can see the chainsaw returning, regardless of who the protagonist is.

I don't see how it helps the 'atmosphere' by taking out weapons deemed inappropriate for said atmosphere. I mean the atmosphere in all GTA games is pretty much 100% silly caricature, its the nature of the series and nothing will change that, or if they do ever try to make 100% serious games/stories that'll be the day I give up on the GTA series. I sorely missed the flamethrower, chainsaw, katana and minigun. Plus the ammo limit was annoying, the guy is already carrying 8 different firearms, why not let him carry 50 rpg rounds and a gatling gun as well?

If I wanted a game with a chainsaw, minigun, flamethrower those guns I would play postal 2, it's a very "comical" game and you can even use a cat as a silencer (google it).
I think that rockstar made the right move by not including these weapons and using a standard array of weapons. it really set the atmosphere for me when playing it and I respect rockstar for doing so.
