For the musicians of the forum:
What are you currently learning to play on your instrument or with your band?

Lately, I have been learning to play God of Thunder (by KISS, if you've been living under a rock for the past 20 or so years) and Social Distortion's Story of my Life in my free time.
In my band, we've been practicing Rolling in the Deep (by ADELE, if you still haven't moved out from under that rock) because the other members' tastes in music isn't quite as classy as mine.

By the way, I play guitar.

I usually just try to write for my band but a fun tune I learned was MJ's Beat It. Fun party riff, always gets a huge laugh. Btw Leads Guitars/Vocals.

You mentioned working at Ibanez, did you say what you did there, and for how long?

After digging up a complete Diary of a Madman user's attempt on YouTube, I think I should try all the parts to that song, often I like just knowing a cool intro

This is true, Ed Van Halen said some of his favorite guitar bits are just the interesting lead in licks to notable songs he's done. That comment was a few years ago, so who knows, but I think the question was over what favorite songs or Essential EVH he would pick

Yea I worked at that sh*thole for just under three years, the sheer jitbag attitude and quality was enuff for me to melt down on the midget that ran my division. I was a guitar tech/repairs restoration fella. Worked on alotta "pros" ahem fiddles. Pro tip don't ever buy an Ibanez.

Also, I've started working on Jesus of Suburbia by Green Day. It's pretty long, so I've mainly been focusing on Jesus of Suburbia and Dearly Beloved.

Nice. Took me a while to learn the drums to that but it's so worth it. To play a lengthy song is really quite satisfying biggrin.gif

As you may have guessed, I play the drums. Have done for about 9-10 years. I'm also learning guitar, well, have been for quite some time. At the moment I'm making my own stuff up. I'm about half way through my little solo piece and it's coming along quite nicely. I'm taking a lot of inspiration from David Gilmour and Gary Moore, absolute masters of their art. I recently learnt the rather cliche solo from "Sweet Child O' Mine". The fast bit is still a challenge but it's a fun one.

I agree that some really funky intros are great to learn. Depending on what you learn to play, they can help in all sorts of ways. Some are just great purely for their sound.

Yeah, it's a great song. Not very hard, but hella long.
However, I generally don't learn songs as a whole; just little catchy riffs and famous tidbits of it, unless I need to learn the whole song for something (i.e., my band).

There are a couple of tricky bit on drums but other than that, it's just really fun to play. I often defended that album simply for the drumming. Not one song is boring to play. "Homecoming" is the only one I've yet to play entirely. There's some really nice riffs and intros out there so you can never tire of learning them.

@ locolow: Nice choice, man. Gorgeous song. I want to learn "Mudmen" but I'm sh*te at reading tabs sad.gif

@King Mystery: Sucks that you play Kiss and sh*t like that and yet in your band you play adele, not a bad song but you know...

@Greatgig: Yeah, marooned is a beautiful instrumental, and Mudmen is great as well, not that well known but really good, you play only drums right?

Yeah. I mean, I don't necessarily hate Adele, but she's not really my fave. But the song is easy, and our singer likes the song and sings it well, so I guess it works for now.
Hopefully later I'll be able to convince them to do Green Day or some sh*t, but none of the members are really big on rock.

Play guitar... LOVE playing Rage Against the Machine... Toms riffs are so fun. Dont play in a band or anything, no one around to really play with really... Im still trying to get down the octave pedal solo in Killing in the Name of.... Its not to hard or anything, but I find myself screwing up on it still... tough time memorizing that one... maybe because I focus too much on working the pedal? :\

Nice, what's your favorite to play from them? For me a whole song would have to be probably Bombtrack or Killing in the name of ( if I can get that pesky solo ) favorite riff would have to be Freedom.. simple but just flows so fun biggrin.gif love it when you rip on the strings past the nut and it makes that crazy high pitched scream.. only works on my Fender... Not my Epiphone..

One of my favorites is In My Eyes. I know it's a cover, but personally, I prefer it over the original. Either way, the opening riff is straight-up badass.
I also like Killing in the Name Of, of course, and the bassline for Calm Like a Bomb is very cool.
