| QUOTE (K^2 @ Friday, May 11 2012, 17:08) | | I have no problem with religious fanatics waving a white flag. In fact, more religious fanatics should take example from them. Don't like evolution taught in schools? Home-school your kids instead of trying to change the system. The rest of us will only be better off. | This, basically. I've never understood how a country with such an enshrined separation between church and state can have such an enormous problem with religious fundamentalism as the US does. But, then again, my personal view is that is that religion of any variety and denomination should have absolutely no place in the public domain. No state-funded faith schools- if you don't like the curriculum, then you'd better privately educate your kids. No significant displays of religious denomination- you can wear a cross, crucifix, star of David, headscarf, hijāb or niqāb- people should have the right to dress how they want as long it isn't actively offensive of inflammatory, but certainly no preaching on the streets or door to door. No state funding for religious charities- after all, charity is about personal philanthropy the same way that religion is about personal spirituality. No religiously motivated political parties. No state funding for religious organisations in general, in fact. In my view, the sooner people accept that "religion" is a personal and spiritual concept at it's very core, rather than the politically and financially motivated mass-marketed tripe that most believers consume, then the world will be better for it.
