I'm not one to post news stories, or celebrity death announcements, but Maurice Sendak is one of those people that will forever leave a mark on my brain.

I sure hope you all grew up with the book "Where The Wild Things Are"

The wife and I have always been huge fans of the book, bought the figures and the movie. I even have the figures set up on a shelf in my son's room atm.

This book probably did more to inspire my drawing at a young age than any cartoon at the time.

R.I.P.

@meta, I have not seen the movie, and I often wonder if I should or not. I get weird with sh*t that touches my childhood, and I half consider Wild Things to be one of those sacred things that shouldn't be anything other than the original. Although, I do understand that Sendak had major input and influence before and throughout the movie.

I grew up with a mother who was heavily involved in the world of children's literature and the first addition of 'Where the Wild Things Are' is still in the family. I called tonight to make sure. Through the years she has given me some of the book collection, and I imagine I will get that one next. She gave me my 'Ferdinand' a couple of years ago and it is valued at over $300 - There is no way I'd sell it.

Hippie or not - every young kid(mostly boys) need to be familiar with the story of Ferdinand The Bull. And hey, since it was written in '30s it predates all that hippie crap anyway.

There is a reason why some book, poems, writings, and movies are timeless.

Sure, I'm used to staring quiet threads, but I must say I am a bit disappointed that people haven't chimed in with their love of growing up with "Where the Wild Things Are". Kinda says something, and I'm sorry you missed out on such a great book with some of the best illustrations to stimulate your little growing brain.

Added before I hit post:
Holy crap, I just remembered that we also own a book documenting the crazy wooden pop up sculptures he did. Ah man, I hope my mom calls me back tomorrow and says we have that around too. Wait...now I'm wondering if that was him???? Awhell, my mom will know.

And I ramble.

I don't know if anyone saw it, but Sendak did an interview with Stephen Colbert just this year at his home, a few months before he died.
it was incredible.

the man still had all his mental faculties and was sharp as a tack.
he kept up with Colbert better than most of his guests ever do. in fact his wit actually out-paced Colbert a lot of the time.
what an awesome guy. funny as hell.

Strange looking back on reading that book now.

Really makes you wonder about the power of imagination.

I was listening to Parade by Tyler the Creator yesterday and one of the verses reminded me of this book. I watched his interview a couple weeks ago with Colbert. It's strange to know that someone who contributed to a small part of my childhood is gone now. I'll have to read that book again someday. R.I.P Maurice, and thanks.

Nope. I'd never heard of it before the film. Here's something that made me want to tip my hat as a mark of respect for the man though:

Killer book, Like Trip, I remember this from my Childhood in the 1970s, it is a definite classic, forget the play, forget the movie, I mean the book, I don't think it can be done better then the original

I never knew about this guy's book or he himself but still R. I. P.

I don't really know why I spent childhood watching Barney on TV rather then reading, I could have known him.
