Microsoft Support tells me that the error occurs when a client logs off from a terminal server session on a terminal server that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2). But I'm sure that you aren't running any server, are you?

You haven't told us what operating system you're on.
I suggest you try updating your video drivers. If your video drivers are updated, then remove them completely and reinstall.

If that doesn't do the trick, then it would help if you can recall when the problem first started occurring and what changes you made to your system just before this happened.

oh yeah, sry, forgot to mention i'm running Windows 8 Developer Preview.

well, Windows 8 downloads and installs video drivers through Windows Update, so i don't think i should remove them and re-install

Oh, well that's the typical solution but that was for Vista on Win 7. I've no idea about Win 8 though. Sorry I can't be of any more help.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Win8DC the first one to come out? I know there is a Win8CP (Consumer Preview) out now and it's relatively recent. You might want to "update" (for lack of a better term) to that.

Windows 8 isn't finished yet so it's expected to have bugs. You can submit them and maybe in the end you will be rewarded?
MS did reward those who gave submit a bug during the Vista time frame, those who contributed got a free copy of Vista Ultimate.
It also happened during Windows 7, invited beta testers got a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate.
And there was a Windows feedback program, where you let them monitor you computer habits for 3 months. I joined and used IE during that time instead of
FF. In the end I got my reward too, a full retail copy of Vista Ultimate (32 and 64 bit, this is before Win7 existed). There were also five other softwares you can choose from.

And this was their most recent rewards for those tho participated (now closed)
-Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010
-Microsoft Expressions Web 2
-Microsoft Flight Simulator X Deluxe
-Disneyland Adventures Kinect XBOX 360
-Forza Motorsport 4 XBOX 360

If you're running Win 8 Developer Preview, you do realize that it will expire on January 15, 2013? Either way you are going to have issues if you made the mistake of "upgrading" Windows 7/Vista to Win8. The proper way would be a dual boot. Either way, when you reinstall a new OS, assuming it is Windows, it will make a directory called "Windows.old" that will have all of your old files in it (assuming you don't perform a reformat.)

If it were me, I would ditch the DP and go with the CP, or (in my case) just move back to 7 because Win 8's interface is so awkward for regular computers. Tablets and all that are just novelty, unless you are specifically working in the graphics/design field.

That Win 8 DP will expire anyway. Windows 7 has no problem handling "8 cores." Which CPU is this anyway?
