Hi, I recently did a major hardware upgrade (new MB, CPU, ram, video card.) to my computer and windows couldn't load. I had a hint that would happen, but figured a repair install would fix it. It didn't, but I had planned to have a dual boot system anyway and went ahead and installed Windows 7.

Of course, I had access to my XP partition and was able to get everything necessary copied over. Windows 7 is setup the way I like and now I'm ready to purge of Win XP.

Please tell my an easy way to rid my system of Windows XP?

Thanks!

Format the XP partition, you may have to open your bootloader config file to manually remove the XP boot entry, but either way XP will be gone.

Just curious, how many partitions do you have?
If you're not sure go to run and paste this "compmgmt.msc" without quotes
Then on left side, click Disk management

Six. Win XP & Win 7 on a 320GB drive. The other four are on a 640GB drive.

Boot into 7,

Click start, right-click Computer, properties, advanced system settings
On The 'System Properties' window that pops up, click the advanced tab
Click 'settings' under 'startup and recovery' then select 7 as your default and uncheck 'time to display operating systems'.

You will no longer see XP listed as an option to boot into at startup.

Click start, right-click Computer, manage
On the Computer Manager window that pops up click 'disk management'
Right-click the partition you want to remove and click 'Delete partition'.

Windows XP data is now gone from your system.

The last step is optional:
You can now click on 'Unpartitioned space' and choose 'format' to create a new partition or right-click your current partition and choose 'extend partition'. The former keeps two partitions and the latter creates one larger partition.

Fozzy Fozborne & everyone else, I don't see a Windows XP option while in Win 7 (yeah, XP is that messed up!). So later on, I'll install a fresh copy of XP, then try what you suggested.

Thank yaw tounge2.gif

Wait. You just got rid of XP, why would you want it back that badly?
One thing I might suggest is this:
If your mobo has the option to hold an F-key on start up, usually F11, and select a drive to boot from then....
Get another HDD
Disconnect the Win7 drive, just to be safe disconnect any other HDD other than the new/other drive of course
Install XP onto this new/other drive
Once it's down reconnect all of the drives you disconnected before.
Go into the BIOS and select which HDD you want to be the primary.
Now when you want to switch between the OSes, just use the mobo's boot menu (F11) and select the drive you want to start from.

I did this for a while when I got an SSD to install 7 onto and was still slowly moving to 7 from XP. At first I had XP as the my prime and then later 7. Now my XP drive isn't even connected to keep it safe.

If you need XP for something other than games and you have Win7 Pro you can get XP Mode to run XP in. I'm not sure but I think you might be able to get Microsoft's VPC and run it in that or VMWare and run it in there. Basically a virtual environment for XP to run in while you're still in 7.

XP is not gone; there's an option for it during boot. In fact, I have to select Windows 7 for boot and not the default non-working XP. I rather install a fresh copy of XP, then try what Fozzy Fozborne suggested.

While in Windows 7, in the start search box type "msconfig" then press enter. Under the "Boot" tab, you can select which OS will be the default (i.e. the one that is automatically selected in the list), and you can also remove the entry from appearing in the list.

Simply remove the Windows XP boot entry and it will no longer prompt you when you start up your PC. It will boot straight into Windows 7.

NO NO NO.
Installing XP will break the Windows 7 boot loader.
Go to disk management in 7, delete whatever partition you have XP installed on.

Did you install XP and Win7 both to the same partition or are they separated?
If it's together, then right click on C:\ and run disk clean up. Look for previous Windows installation, select that and delete.
If it's separate, just format the HDD with XP installed and then go to the boot loader and delete the XP boot entry.
Another is to just lower the Timeout from 30 seconds down to 0.
Hit apply, OK, and restart

I love how I post 2 links, one an article that explains this and the other an 8 minute video both of which explain the exact same thing on how to do this and yet he still doesn't want to take the time to do it right.
